I called George Bush a ‘wimp’ on the cover of Newsweek. Why I was wrong.

Image
In October 1987, when George H.W. Bush announced his candidacy for the presidency of the United States, Newsweek magazine ran a cover story titled “Fighting the ‘Wimp Factor.’” The article did not quite come out and declare that Bush was a weakling, and it noted that Bush’s own advisers were worried about the “wimp” label. In 1991, he had the courage to abandon his own “read my lips” vow and instead raise taxes in the cause of restoring fiscal sanity to the federal budget, left badly out of whack by his predecessor, Ronald Reagan. It cost him a second term in office, which he had almost surely earned by bringing the Cold War to a successful, peaceful conclusion and by driving Iraq from Kuwait in the 1991 Operation Desert Storm. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2PbCRZ1 via Latest News

Oil prices surge on output cut pledge, US-China deal

Image
Oil prices soared on Monday after Russia and Saudi Arabia renewed a pact to cap output, while the US agreed to halt raising tariffs on Chinese imports, stalling a trade row that many feared could hit demand for the commodity. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Saturday he and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman "have agreed to extend our agreement" to limit production as prices slump on global markets. An existing deal committing OPEC and non-members to cuts expires this year. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2rfOmVE via Latest News

G20 agreement backs 'rules-based' order but bows to Trump on trade reforms

Image
World leaders have signed off on an agreement which reaffirms a basic commitment by the world’s biggest economies to multilateral trade and a “rules-based international order”, but bows to US demands for urgent reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Agreement on a joint communique was by no means guaranteed at the beginning of the summit, when US negotiators took hardline positions, rejecting any mention of multilateralism, the “rules-based order” or the role of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as a global safety net. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Sp65FY via Latest News

On Wednesday, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said search and recovery teams had finished going through the ruins of some 18,000 homes and other buildings that were incinerated. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Rutc1M via Latest News

Mexican city shuts down migrant shelter near US border, blaming 'bad sanitary conditions'

Image
The city of Tijuana has closed down a migrant shelter close to the US border where as many as 6,000 Central American migrants have been staying as they wait for their asylum claims to be processed. The migrants are now being moved from the sports centre where the shelter had been located to a former concert venue that is much further from the US-Mexico border, officials have said. The facilities were designed to hold about half as many people as had been placed there as the migrants arrived from their long journeys north through Mexico. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2FTPmsT via Latest News

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's presence at the summit of the Group of 20 powers in Buenos Aires demonstrated he was firmly in control, as he met with Western leaders and sealed an oil pact with Russian President Vladimir Putin. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2U8GcMn via Latest News

Pompeo condemns Iran missile test

Image
Amid tension between Washington and Tehran over ballistic missiles, Pompeo warned in a statement released on Twitter that Iran is increasing its "testing and proliferation" of missiles and called on the Islamic Republic to "cease these activities." President Donald Trump pulled out of an international nuclear agreement in May and reimposed sanctions on Tehran, criticizing the deal for not including curbs on Iran's development of ballistic missiles or its support for proxies in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq. Iran says its missile program is purely defensive but has threatened to disrupt oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf, if the United States tries to strangle Iranian oil exports. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2RtlHIj via Latest News
