McConnell: Bevin 'had a good 4 years,' but likely lost

Image
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin "had a good four years," but he says a review of Bevin's narrow reelection defeat is unlikely to change the outcome. Bevin trailed Democrat Andy Beshear by about 5,000 votes in the Nov. 5 election. McConnell was in Carroll County on Monday to tout a US-Spain treaty he helped pass that cut the taxes for the North American Stainless plant there. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2p899gx via Latest News

After strike, scandal, US auto union faces reckoning

Image
All fall, as the United Auto Workers launched and ended a lengthy strike amid contract talks with Detroit's "Big Three" manufacturers, the union has been shadowed by a growing corruption probe. The scandal -- which led to last week's leave of absence announcement from UAW President Gary Jones -- has centered on bribes and kickbacks as well as revelations that some union officials and auto executives effectively stole money meant for worker training and spent it on golfing outings, pricey cigars and fancy meals. From all appearances, hourly workers have set aside frustrations with UAW leadership during the crunch period of contract talks, backing a 40-day strike at General Motors that ended last month before negotiations with Ford and then Fiat Chrysler. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Q5TRUC via Latest News

UPDATE 11-Hong Kong violence prompts reminder that China troops close at hand

Hong Kong police shot and critically wounded a protester and a man was set on fire on Monday in violence that prompted leader Carrie Lam to denounce "enemies of the people" and drew a chilling warning from a senior Chinese newspaper editor. Protesters threw petrol bombs at police after a weekend of clashes across the Chinese-ruled territory, marking a dramatic escalation in more than five months of often violent pro-democracy unrest. "The violence has far exceeded the call for democracy and the demonstrators are now the people's enemy," Hong Kong chief executive Lam said in a defiant televised address. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Q1j8PX via Latest News

Samsung Galaxy Fold sold out in China once again

Image
Three days after the first batch, Samsung's Galaxy Fold sold out once again in China in just a couple of minutes. For the Chinese 11.11 sales event, the foldable handset went out of stock in no time despite its rather asking price of over $2,000. However, Samsung didn't go into much detail how many units it moved in the second batch. The good news is that more stock is coming in fairly frequently so if you are set on getting a unit you will get your chance sooner or later. Swedish police set up task force to combat gang violence

Swedish police said on Monday they would set up a special task force to deal with a wave of shootings and bombings linked to criminal gangs following the fatal shooting of a 15-year old in the city of Malmo at the weekend. Sweden has long held a reputation as being one of the safest countries in the world and while overall crime and murder rates remain low, gang wars in major cities have claimed an increasing number of victims in recent years. On Saturday, two 15-year-olds were shot outside a pizza restaurant in Malmo in what police said appeared to be a gang conflict over control of the drug trade in the area. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Q7MMCU via Latest News

Mexico grants asylum to Bolivia's Evo Morales

Image
Mexico granted asylum to Bolivia's former President Evo Morales on Monday as unrest shook the South American nation, helping cement the Mexican government's emerging role as a bastion of diplomatic support for left-wing leaders in Latin America. Mexico's Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Morales' life was in danger, and the decision to grant him asylum was in Mexico's long tradition of sheltering exiles. Morales' government collapsed on Sunday after ruling party allies quit and the army urged him to step down in the wake of a disputed election, adding to a sense of crisis in Latin America, which has been hit by weeks of protests and unrest. Looting and roadblocks convulsed Bolivia after Morales stepped down. He said "violent groups" attacked his house. His exact whereabouts were unknown, though it was believed he had left in the presidential plane for his stronghold of Chapare province. "His life and integrity is at risk," Ebrard told repo

Thousands join French march against Islamophobia

Over 10,000 people turned out north of Paris on Sunday for a march against Islamophobia that drew criticism from both the government and the far right. The march was called by a number of individuals and organisations, including the Collective against Islamophobia in France (CCIF). It also came as the debate over the veil has been revived in France and against a background of several jihadist attacks in France in recent years. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/34Kk0MX via Latest News

Democrats Say Republican Impeachment Witnesses May Testify

EU agrees sanctions on Turkey over Cyprus drilling, to add names later

The decision, reflecting a broader deterioration in EU ties with Turkey, aims to punish Ankara for violating Cyprus' maritime economic zone by drilling off the divided island. It follows a separate decision to stop new arms sales by EU governments to Turkey over Ankara's Oct. 9 incursion into Syria. Turkey, which is a formal candidate to join the EU, says it is operating in waters on its own continental shelf or areas where Turkish Cypriots have rights. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2qKjoIA via Latest News
