Uruguay withdraws from OAS meeting over Venezuela opposition delegation

Image
Uruguay on Thursday withdrew from a meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS) being held in Medellin, Colombia, in protest of the presence of what it said was an illegitimate delegation from Venezuela. The incident, on the first of two days of meetings, laid bare a lack of consensus in the organization over whether to increase pressure on embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who is backed by some member states but called a dictator by others. The country's opposition, lead by National Assembly head Juan Guaido, appointed Gustavo Tarre as its representative to the body. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2XcRWm6 via Latest News

Kamala Harris Uses Her Story to Force Dems to Really Consider Race

Image
It took a while to get there, but as anticipated, former Vice President Joe Biden’s record on race led to one of the most heated moments of Wednesday’s Democratic presidential debate.Sen. Kamala Harris, who demonstrated her fierce prosecutorial acumen throughout the night, came at Biden for his “hurtful” comments about his friendly relations with segregationist senators in the 1970s, and then deftly pivoted to Biden’s own opposition to busing during that era, revealing that she was one of the young African-Americans who benefited from that desegregation program.Kamala Harris Hammers Biden for His Past Work With RacistsTrue to form, Biden reasserted his personal history on civil rights — ignoring the fact that Harris opened her attack by conceding that he is not a racist — and refused to apologize for his remarks about how “we got things done” with segregationists Democrats in the 1970s  or renounce his now politically untenable old position on busing. He condescendingly told Harris that

Marine Staff Sgt. Giorgio Kirylo said he watched as Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher tried to save the 17-year-old captive and never saw him use his hunting knife on him. Gallagher is accused of fatally stabbing the adolescent captive while he was under his care in Iraq in 2017 and to shooting civilians. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2ZRWOtD via Latest News

UPDATE 3-Apple moves Mac Pro production to China from U.S. - WSJ

Apple Inc is shifting manufacturing of its new Mac Pro desktop computer to China from the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. The move comes at a time when the Trump administration has threatened to impose new levies to cover nearly all imports from China and pressured Apple and other manufacturers to make their products in the United States if they want to avoid tariffs. Last week, Apple asked its major suppliers to assess the cost implications of moving 15% to 30% of their production capacity from China to Southeast Asia, according to a Nikkei report. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2KNwZaG via Latest News

Trump Wants Census Delay After Citizenship Question Blocked

Image
(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump said Thursday he has asked lawyers to delay the U.S. census after the Supreme Court put on hold his plan to include a citizenship question in the survey next year.“Can anyone really believe that as a great Country, we are not able the ask whether or not someone is a Citizen. Only in America!” Trump tweeted. The outcome of the case has sweeping political implications. The Census Bureau has found that adding a citizenship question could depress the response rate of minority households, which could result in large numbers of undocumented immigrants not being counted. If that were to happen, states with large immigrant populations -- such as California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, New York and Illinois -- could potentially lose a seat in the U.S. House as well as votes in the Electoral College. The court left open a path that might still let the question be added, but it would require the government to move quickly with a new justification -- and to win what

U.S. rights groups, doctors sue to stop Georgia 'heartbeat' abortion ban

Image
The law, which was passed by Republicans, will make abortion possible only in the first few weeks of a pregnancy absent a medical emergency, in many cases before a woman even realizes she is pregnant. "This law is an affront to the dignity and health of Georgians," the lawsuit, which was filed by the Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of the plaintiffs, said. At least four other Republican-led states this year passed laws dramatically limiting abortion. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2KKzYkm via Latest News

Witness could face perjury charge in Navy SEAL court-martial

Image
A witness who dropped stunning testimony at the war crimes trial of a decorated Navy SEAL by telling the court he had killed an Islamic State captive in Iraq in 2017 — not his accused platoon chief — could now face charges of perjury, according to the Navy. The Navy's legal adviser to the commander overseeing the court-martial of Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher notified the witness's lawyer, Brian Ferguson, in an email late Tuesday that the testimony Corey Scott gave last week could be used against him if he lied on the stand or gave a false statement. Cmdr. Tam Lawrence, Naval Special Warfare spokesperson, said Scott was granted immunity in exchange for the promise of truthful testimony. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2WZHrO4 via Latest News

Senate defeats measure to restrain Trump on Iran

Image
The U.S. Senate on Friday defeated legislation that would have barred President Donald Trump from launching an attack on Iran without first obtaining the approval of Congress, except in self-defense. The measure was defeated 50 to 40, ensuring that the measure would not get the 60 needed to pass the Republican-majority Senate as an amendment to an annual defense policy bill. Ten senators did not vote. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2XBHnbA via Latest News

US sanctions Maduro's son as it raises pressure on Venezuela

The action by the U.S. Treasury Department freezes any U.S. assets belonging to Nicolas Maduro Jr. and prohibits American from doing business with him. "Maduro's regime was built on fraudulent elections, and his inner circle lives in luxury off the proceeds of corruption while the Venezuelan people suffer," said Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2KKq1TN via Latest News

Supreme Court declines Alabama bid to revive abortion restriction

Image
The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday sidestepped a major new challenge to abortion rights by declining to hear Alabama's bid to revive a Republican-backed state law that would have effectively banned the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The justices left in place a lower court ruling that struck down the 2016 law, which would have criminalized a method called dilation and evacuation that is the most common type of abortion performed during the second trimester of a pregnancy. The law in question is different than an even more strict Alabama measure signed by Republican Governor Kay Ivey in May. The new law, also facing a legal challenge, would ban nearly all abortions in the state, even in cases of rape and incest. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2XCoNzZ via Latest News
