An NBC reporter's young son adorably wandered onto set during her live broadcast

NBC News' national security and Pentagon correspondent Courtney Kube was able to sneak a little extra family time in while she was live on air Wednesday.Kube was in studio reporting on the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria, when her young son, who was visiting the studio, popped up behind her and stole the spotlight. Kube couldn't help but crack a smile as the camera cut to a graphic. She handled the rest of the report like a pro, too, diving right back into a detailed explanation of what's going on in Syria.> Sometimes unexpected breaking news happens while you're reporting breaking news. California governor signs law capping rent increases

Image
California will limit rent increases for some people over the next decade after Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law Tuesday aimed at combating a housing crisis in the nation's most populous state. Newsom signed the bill at an event in Oakland, an area where a recent report documented a 43% increase in homelessness over two years. Sudden rent increases are a contributing cause of the state's homeless problem, which has drawn national attention and the ire of Republican President Donald Trump. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/321rpqi via Latest News

Squirrels' stash of winter walnuts causes car chaos

Image
Holly Persic was driving to a library in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, when she noticed the car seemed strange. "My wife called me from Northland Library and said that her car smelt like it was burning, and was making a weird sound," Chris Persic said in a Facebook post that has since gone viral. Holly opened the hood to find an engine full of walnuts neatly packed in grass, presumably stored there by squirrels over the weekend, when the vehicle had been parked in the open. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2LYPLvb via Latest News

Trump Gives Swing-District Democrats New Cause to Back Inquiry

Image
(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump has erased any lingering doubts among the swing-district Democrats who galvanized the House impeachment move two weeks ago despite the risks to their re-election chances in 2020.The decision by seven first-term Democrats elected in Trump-leaning districts to back an impeachment inquiry after months of resisting the idea tipped the balance in the House and helped spark Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to announce the investigation. Now they are back home during a congressional break, facing voters as well as a concerted effort by Republicans to make them pay. At town halls and in interviews, members of the group express no regrets.“I did the right thing, and I will be able to look in the mirror 30 years from now and say I was on the right side of history,” Virginia Representative Elaine Luria told a packed town hall in her coastal district last week that’s home to Naval Station Norfolk.Luria and the six other freshmen lawmakers who announced their sup

California eases mandatory sentences, restricts body cameras

California will soon end some mandatory sentences, make it easier to expunge old criminal records, bar charging inmates for medical care and ban police from using facial recognition software on body cameras under more than two dozen criminal justice bills that freshman Gov. Gavin Newsom announced signing into law late Tuesday. The measures continue the state's march away from get-tough measures that once clogged California prisons, prompting a federal court-ordered population cap. Among the measures are two that remove mandatory sentences. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/33cKOVh via Latest News

Trump Order Targets Rules From ‘Unaccountable Bureaucrats’

Image
(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump signed a pair of executive orders on Wednesday to limit the use of memos, letters, and other federal guidance from agencies saying they represented an unchecked “pernicious kind of regulation imposed by unaccountable bureaucrats.”Conservatives and business groups have long complained that the agencies use the process to establish “stealth regulation” that circumvents Congress and avoids public scrutiny. Unlike formal government rules the interpretations are issued without the typical notice and comment period required by law.“Guidance has frequently been used to subject U.S. citizens and businesses to arbitrary” enforcement actions, Trump said at a White House signing ceremony. One critic of the move, the watchdog group Public Citizen, said Trump’s orders would actually undermine his own promise to combat a spate of illnesses and deaths tied to vaping, as the Food and Drug Administration is seeking to use guidance to implement a ban on flavored vapi

China warns Apple against 'reckless' support of HK protesters

Image
China's state media accused Apple Wednesday of supporting pro-democracy protesters, warning the US tech giant would suffer consequences for its "unwise and reckless" decision, in an echo of campaigns against other Western firms. An opinion piece in the People's Daily, the mouthpiece of the ruling Communist Party, highlighted a transport app available on Apple's store that it alleged helped protesters identify police in Hong Kong. "Apple's approval for the app obviously helps rioters," the article said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2IBtEJb via Latest News

Power shut off to millions in California as wildfire risks rise

Image
Electricity was shut off to more than 500,000 California homes and businesses on Wednesday as Pacific Gas and Electric Co imposed a planned power outage of unprecedented scale to reduce wildfire risks posed by high winds and hot, dry weather. A second phase of the "public safety power shutoff" was slated to begin at midday, extending cutoffs to another 234,000 customers, the utility said, and it was considering a third phase for 42,000 more homes and businesses. The outages were planned for communities across 34 of the state's 58 counties, all in PG&E's service area in northern and central California. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2ASqAnA via Latest News

Xinjiang: The making of China's far west police state

Image
China's all-encompassing security crackdown in Xinjiang has turned the northwest region -- home to most of the country's ethnic Uighur population -- into a place activists describe as an open air prison. Upwards of one million mostly Muslim ethnic minorities in the region are held in re-education camps, according to estimates cited by a UN panel in 2018. The United States blacklisted 28 Chinese entities this week over their alleged roles in rights violations in Xinjiang and said it would also curb visas for officials involved in "detention or abuse" of minorities. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2MnMjco via Latest News

After Killing Teen in U.K., Runaway Wife of U.S. ‘Spy’ Provokes Diplomatic Crisis

Justice4Harry FacebookHarry Dunn was an outgoing 19-year-old, a skilled motorcyclist with a twin brother and four other siblings who happened to be driving through the valley just outside the Royal Air Force base in Croughton, England, on the evening of Aug. 27, when Anne Sacoolas crested the hill in her Volvo XC90 luxury SUV. Sacoolas, the 42-year-old wife of an American who worked at the important intelligence gathering facility, had only been in the U.K. for three weeks. She pulled out of the base on the wrong side of the road, apparently forgetting for a moment the rules of left-lane British driving. The Second Oldest Profession is Here to StayDunn had no time to react when Sacoolas came straight at him, the Dunn family spokesman told The Daily Beast. The impact sent him flying over the top of the heavy SUV, causing multiple injuries. He died a few hours later in a local hospital. At the scene of the accident, Sacoolas, whose 12-year-old son was reportedly a passenger in the Volvo,

Neil Gorsuch fears 'massive social upheaval' if Supreme Court rules in favor of civil rights protections for LGBTQ workers

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch is expected to be the deciding vote in a ruling over whether the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to LGBTQ people. Gorsuch, a conservative who has shown a propensity for carving out his own judicial path, said there are strong arguments favoring LGBTQ workers who were fired for their sexual orientation or transgender status, but he wasn't quite ready to rule in their favor, calling the cases "really close."One of the things Gorsuch is considering is the aftermath of the ruling. He wondered whether the justices should take into account the "massive social upheaval" that could follow a ruling in the workers' favor. That reasoning led to a little bit of head scratching.> So Neil Gorsuch apparently was concerned today about "massive social upheaval" if SCOTUS rules LGBTQ can't be fired under Civil Rights Act. > > Except, 21+ states have these laws now, including his beloved Colorado, where he was law profe

Russia warns against actions that 'inhibit peace process' in Syria

Image
Russia's security council said on Tuesday it was important to avoid hindering the peace process in Syria, following discussions with President Vladimir Putin, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. The influential council discussed the creation of a constitutional committee in the country and "remarked that at this stage everyone should avoid any actions that can inhibit the peace process in Syria," he said. Peskov said earlier Tuesday that Russia "is following very closely how the situation is developing" and was not informed about the withdrawal of the United States from the region -- something that has sparked fears of a Turkish attack on Kurdish forces. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2LWme54 via Latest News

Nobel prize winner laments lack of money for young physicists

Image
Swiss scientist Michel Mayor, who shared the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physics, said on Wednesday he was concerned about how hard is it for young physicists to make a living from their science work. "For young people doing science it is always a problem to find a permanent position, and some of them are extremely good," Mayor said in an interview with Reuters Television at an event near Madrid. While there is financial support for some top researchers, such as himself, many young scientists do not have enough resources to develop their own careers, he said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/35jwegp via Latest News

Analyst: the iPhone SE 2 is coming in Q1 next year, AR-capable iPad Pro and headset soon after

Image
Ming-Chi Kuo is building on his previous predictions about the iPhone SE - it will come in the first quarter of next year. It will have an iPhone 8-based design, down to the 4.7" LCD, however it will use the Apple A13 chipset from this year. Nikkei Asian Review is predicting very similar specs. Kuo predicts Apple will sell 30-40 million of these. One thing that's not clear if the phone will use the cheap Touch ID sensor (which will fragment Apple's ecosystem) or a pricier Face ID module. Anyway, Kuo says Apple will also unveil a new iPad Pro in Q1. It will feature a 3D Time of Flight... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2Mp5enc via IFTTT
