North Korea’s 13,000 Deadly Artillery Pieces: The Real Threat Trump Should Fear?

Image
"Even without using nuclear weapons, North Korea has the capacity to unleash a devastating level of violence against a significant portion of the ROK population through some mix of conventional artillery and possibly chemical munitions," according to a January 2019 report from RAND, a California think tank with close ties to the U.S. military.North Korea on May 4, 2019 test-fired a short-range ballistic missile \-- its first major launch in the 18 months since North Korean leader Kim Jong Un suspended missile testing ahead of a summit with U.S. president Donald Trump.Pyongyang on May 9, 2019 launched a second “projectile,” South Korean officials said.(This first appeared in May.)The May tests of at least one apparently nuclear-capable short-range missile startled foreign observers and threatened to elevate tensions between the United States and its allies South Korea and Japan on one side and, on the other side, North Korea and its main patron China. But a less dramatic test o

Trump and rally crowd turn to applaud group of black supporters with 'not racist' T-shirts

Image
Donald Trump and his mainly white crowd turned around to applaud a group of black supporters at a rally. The crowd clapped and cheered around a dozen people of colour wearing and waving T-shirts with the slogan: “TRUMP & Republicans Are Not RACIST.”The president had been talking about the beneficiaries of criminal justice reform when he turned to the small group, pointed at them and mouthed “thank you”.A separate clip posted by ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott showed the same small group getting applause from the hall for waving their T-shirts while music played at the rally. It comes only two weeks after the “send her back” chants at his North Carolina rally, which followed Mr Trump’s now notorious “go back” tweets about four congresswomen of colour.“Some of the most popular people at Trump rallies are the small collection of non-white folks,” The New York Times reporter Astead Herndon tweeted.“In Greenville last week one black guy was holding a small selfie line for literally no

‘Suicide Mission’: Democratic Candidates Warned Against Attacking Obama

Image
Former Attorney General Eric Holder and Rev. Al Sharpton warned Democratic presidential candidates against attacking former President Barack Obama, whose record came under fire during Wednesday night’s CNN debate.“To my fellow Democrats. Be wary of attacking the Obama record. Build on it. Expand it. But there is little to be gained – for you or the party – by attacking a very successful and still popular Democratic President,” Holder warned on Twitter late Wednesday night.“This whole suicide mission of going after Barack Obama smells like desperation, and I think it certainly shows that some of them are just not ready for where they are, and that is where you can take incoming fire and also shoot fire out,” Sharpton said in a Thursday morning appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”“You and I, Joe, have built our careers taking shots at people, but we also know how to take a shot without throwing our mama in front of the bus,” Sharpton told host Joe Scarborough.Democratic candidates took s

Man opens fire in national park ‘because he thought he saw Bigfoot’

Image
A gun-wielding camper has opened fire in an American national park – because he says he saw Bigfoot. The man, who has not been named, offloaded several rounds at Mammoth Cave, in Kentucky, after telling other overnight visitors the half-man-half-ape had lunged at him.Park rangers have since said they had found no evidence Bigfoot was there – but are investigating the fact a firearm was fired.Madelyn Durand and Brad Ginn, who reported the incident, said the shooter had woken them at 11pm on Sunday by shining a flashlight in their tent."We got out and saw a man [and his son] who told us their campsite had been destroyed by someone or something," said Ms Durand, 22. "We heard them coming back about 10 minutes later. We heard them yelling 'I see it'.“We saw the flash from his gun, and he shot maybe 20 yards from the side of our tent into the pitch-black darkness."Asked if she was scared, the Western Kentucky University student told CNN: "I was mostly just co

China's yuan falls to 2019 low after Trump tariff threat

Image
China's yuan fell Friday to its lowest level this year against the dollar following President Donald Trump's threat of new tariffs on Chinese goods, coming close to breaking the politically sensitive level of seven to the U.S. currency. The U.S. Treasury Department declined in May to label China a currency manipulator but said it was closely watching Beijing. Trump's tariff hikes in a fight over China's trade surplus and technology ambitions have put downward pressure on the yuan by fueling fears economic growth might weaken. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2YmAnQS via Latest News

Biden 'surprised' at Obama swipes in latest debate

Image
Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden said Thursday he was "surprised" at the intensity of debate-night criticism leveled at his onetime boss Barack Obama, saying the popular ex-president has nothing to apologize for. "I must tell you, I was a little surprised at how much the incoming was about Barack," Biden told reporters the morning after a debate in which the former vice president clashed with rivals on multiple issues, including deportation policy when he and Obama were in the White House. Biden throughout his campaign has highlighted his partnership with America's first black president, in part to woo African-American voters and progressive Democrats. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2YBLzEJ via Latest News

US to pull out thousands of troops under Taliban deal

Image
America could withdraw thousands of troops from Afghanistan in the coming months as part of an initial peace agreement with the Taliban. American and militant envoys meeting in Qatar's capital said they were optimistic of soon clinching a deal to end America's 18-year-old conflict. An initial deal would see US troop numbers fall to as low as 8,000 from their current level of 14,000, the Washington Post reported. In return the Taliban would have to give guarantees Afghan soil would not become a launchpad for transnational terrorist groups like al-Qaeda. They would also begin negotiating with the Afghan government to find a wider political settlement to the world's deadliest conflict. "I would say that they are 80 or 90 percent of the way there," one official told the paper. "But there is still a long way to go on that last 10 or 20 percent." Sources familiar with the talks said argument among the Taliban may still scupper a deal. The militants have until

Poland remembers failed 1944 revolt against Germans

Image
Maria Mostowska was a young pediatric nurse when the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazi Germans occupying Poland broke out on Aug. 1, 1944. Seventy-five years on, she still vividly remembers how German troops put her against a wall and aimed a machine gun. Some 50,000 fighters of Poland's clandestine Home Army — most of them poorly armed — fought the Germans for 63 days before surrendering, in the biggest single act of resistance in occupied Europe during World War II. Some 18,000 insurgents were killed and another 25,000 were injured. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2KaPhQg via Latest News

Trump Calls Hong Kong Protests ‘Riots,’ Adopting China Rhetoric

Image
(Bloomberg) -- President Donald Trump labeled recent protests in Hong Kong as “riots,” adopting the language used by Chinese authorities and suggesting the U.S. would stay out of an issue that was “between Hong Kong and China.”“Something is probably happening with Hong Kong, because when you look at, you know, what’s going on, they’ve had riots for a long period of time,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday before departing for a campaign rally in Cincinnati.Trump said he didn’t know what China’s attitude was toward unrest in the former British colony, which is home to tens of thousands of Americans. “Somebody said that at some point they’re going to want to stop that,” Trump said. “But that’s between Hong Kong and that’s between China, because Hong Kong is a part of China.”Trump’s comments about the protests in Hong Kong could bolster the city’s Beijing-backed government to crack down, despite the U.S. State Department’s official efforts to defend protesters’ freedom o

Britain's Johnson suffers first electoral setback as PM

Image
Boris Johnson suffered a setback in his first ballot box test as British prime minister on Friday after the Conservative candidate lost to a pro-EU rival in a by-election that slims his parliamentary majority to one. Thursday's vote in the Welsh sheep farming community of Brecon and Radnorshire offered a stark choice between the Brexit-backing incumbent from Johnson's ruling Tories and a Liberal Democrat who wants to preserve Britain's four-decade membership of the European Union. Johnson dropped by the region Tuesday to help out Chris Davies -- a Conservative MP who was forced to step down after being criminally convicted of expenses fraud. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2ZAe9I1 via Latest News
