How Sanchi's spill could spread

(Reuters) - The worst tanker oil spill in decades is unfolding across hundreds of miles of the East China Sea after an Iranian oil tanker carrying more than 100,000 tonnes of toxic oil collided with a freighter and exploded, killing all 32 crew onboard. The ship burned, spewing its cargo, for more than a week before sinking in the waters between China, Japan and South Korea. The Panama-registered Sanchi was carrying the equivalent of nearly 1 million barrels of ultra-light crude, plus its own fuel, to South Korea. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2GoXP3h via Latest News

Image
Czechs went to the polls Friday at the start of a two-day presidential run-off pitting pro-Russian populist incumbent Milos Zeman against liberal pro-European rival Jiri Drahos, in a tight race that promises to go down to the wire. A pre-vote poll by the Kantar TNS and Median agencies showed the two candidates neck-and-neck, with the divisive 73-year-old ex-communist Zeman credited with 45.5 percent of the vote against 45 percent for the academic Drahos. Bookmakers, however, give veteran politician Zeman the edge. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2DI4NCR via Latest News

Zimbabwe university releases Grace Mugabe's PhD thesis

By MacDonald Dzirutwe HARARE (Reuters) - The University of Zimbabwe has published former First Lady Grace Mugabe's PhD thesis after an anti-corruption watchdog said it was investigating whether the wife of ousted President Robert Mugabe was wrongly awarded a doctorate three years ago. Grace graduated in 2014, the same year she launched her career in the ruling ZANU-PF party, a power push that led ultimately to November's de facto coup by political rivals worried she was set to take over from her husband. In contravention of its normal practice, the university did not publish her 226-page thesis, entitled "The changing social structure and functions of the family: The case of children's homes in Zimbabwe", until this week, when it was released on its website (http://ift.tt/2ncUwEK). from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2EchdQI via Latest News

Kim Jong-un's young sister elevated to powerful position controlling North Korea state security

Image
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may have put his younger sister Kim Yo-jong in charge of the pariah nation’s powerful state security apparatus, it has emerged. Citing anonymous sources, South Korean paper, Chosun Ibo, speculated that her role may have been indicated in December by her seating position at the ruling Worker’s Party congress, where she was spotted next to her brother’s right-hand man, Choe Ryong-hae. In a country where optics are all-important, rankings are often signified by the proximity to Kim Jong-un at public events. “Judging by her seat, there is a possibility that she has been promoted,” said a South Korean government source. The position would put her in charge of the State Security Department, overseeing police and prosecution, reported the paper. The role was once held by Jang Song-taek, Mr Kim’s once powerful uncle, who he had executed in 2013. The department was put under party control after his death but has since been “revived and established as an indep...

Weekly poll results: a great chipset is cool and efficient

Image
Maybe Qualcomm, Apple, Samsung and others are right to chase after decreasing nanometers year after year. Our poll showed this is the leading sign of a popular system on a chip, garnering 15% of the votes. Building a chip on a lower nanometers has compound advantages - it decreases power use and heat generation, which lets you increase performance without risking overheating or killing the battery. You usually get two of those three as makers adjust the balance to suit a particular market segment. Improved cooling proved a surprisingly popular option. Counterclockwise: smartphone battery endurance has doubled since 2010

Image
We've looked at smartphone batteries before, but that was just the raw capacity. As you well know, the size of the battery is not the only measure of how long you can go between charges. Our battery test gives a more realistic result so let's chart that. We suspected that with each year, the Endurance rating will grow but also that newer phones will get better Endurance per mAh. As you can see from the chart below the former is true, the latter is not. Starting at around 40 hours between charges for a 2010 phone, the average 2017 phone can get double that. And it has been a fairly... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles http://ift.tt/2DFnNls via IFTTT
