U.K. Parliament Acts to Block a Potentially Chaotic No-Deal Brexit

Image
Britain took a decisive step away from a damaging no-deal Brexit as members of Parliament and political leaders backed efforts to prevent a disorderly departure from the European Union. The House of Commons vote shortly before midnight Wednesday to block a no-deal divorce destroyed the dream of some of Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative Party members for a clean break with the bloc as soon as next week. The vote makes a no-deal split from the EU “very unlikely,” Health Secretary Matt Hancock told BBC Radio on Thursday. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2VoDnqz via Latest News

A New Strongman Marches on the Libyan Capital

Image
Abdullah Doma/GettyROME–The orders in Libya are clear: “Don’t shoot civilians if they are waving a white flag.” But what’s not clear is whether Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar’s rogue Libyan National Army will listen as it advances toward Tripoli, guns blazing. The militia army, which is known to have some ISIS fighters in its ranks, has taken the town of Gharyan, about 50 miles from Tripoli, and is moving west toward the Libyan capital.“We hear your call, Tripoli,” Haftar told his militiamen, according to propaganda tapes of a speech released on social media and reported by the Libya Observer. “It is now the time for the great victory. March forward.”In a long video meant to rally the troops, Haftar is heard saying, “Today, you heroes, enter Tripoli conquerors with peace, using peace with those who raise no arms against you, and using war against those who do.” The escalation comes after weeks of military buildup by Haftar, who controls much of eastern Libya from his base in Benghazi

Biden Jokes About Consensual Hugging in First Speech Since Creepy Touching Allegations

Image
APIn his first public remarks since more than half a dozen women accused him of inappropriately touching them, former Vice President Joe Biden warned a raucous crowd of union workers in Washington, D.C., that their warm reception “may go to my head!”A few moments later, Biden proved himself right.Less than one minute into his speech before the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Biden joked that “I just want you to know, I had permission to hug Lonnie,” referring to union president Lonnie R. Stephenson, and making light of charges made by seven women that he touched, hugged, kissed and physically handled them in ways that made them uncomfortable. The audience of union workers, nearly entirely male, reacted to the joke with hoots, cheers, and whistles.“I don’t know, man,” Biden continued over the laughter. “Anyway.”The former vice president then continued with his address, making no further mention of the allegations against him until making another joke, this time after hav

Pro-Haftar militia forces reach outskirts of Tripoli

Forces loyal to Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar reached a security barrier within 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the capital Tripoli late Thursday, an AFP journalist saw, as world powers warned of consequences for military action. General Abdessalem al-Hassi, head of operations for Haftar's self-proclaimed Libyan National Army (LNA) in the eastern region, said his forces had seized the roadblock without any fighting. Haftar's forces announced Wednesday they were gearing up for an offensive in the west of the country to purge it of "terrorists and mercenaries", having seized key areas of the country's south since the start of the year. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2UCye0K via Latest News

Donald Trump criticised over immigration claim during border wall visit: ‘The system is full’

Image
The US has no more room for immigrants, according to Donald Trump, who made the statement during a tour of the US-Mexico border on Friday evening. Mr Trump visited a section of fencing in Calexico, California, using the opportunity to reinforce immigration as a campaign issue. He warned Mexico of economic sanctions and even threatened to close the border if the country did not do more to stop migrants crossing into the USA.“The system is full. We can’t take you anymore. Wether it’s asylum, whether it’s illegal immigration,” Mr Trump said.Thanking Republicans for their support, Mr Trump took several swipes at Democrats for their resistance to providing border wall funding. It’s “very, very tough to get money from the Democrats”, he said. “The wall is like pulling teeth. It’s pretty tough.”Opponents of the president argued that Mr Trump’s claims about the US being full were rooted in racism, not in the United States’ actual capacity to welcome immigrants.“What he means is America is full i

EU's Tusk proposes to offer UK 12-month 'flexible' extension to Brexit date: BBC

Image
European Council President Donald Tusk is proposing to make an offer of a 12-month "flexible" extension to the UK's Brexit date, the BBC reported on Friday, citing a senior European Union source. The plan would let UK leave sooner if the British parliament ratifies a deal but will need to be agreed by EU leaders next week at a summit, the BBC said. After her EU withdrawal deal was rejected three times by lawmakers, British Prime Minister Theresa May invited opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for talks in parliament to try to plot a way out of the crisis. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2YOO0oG via Latest News

UN council to meet on Libya as Haftar's forces advance

The UN Security Council will meet behind closed doors on Friday to discuss the situation in Libya after the leader of eastern forces in the war-scarred north African country ordered his troops to advance on Tripoli. The spike in tensions came as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was making his first visit as UN chief to Libya ahead of a planned conference later this month aimed at charting a course toward elections. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2ORJrVU via Latest News

Boeing Told 737 MAX Pilots to Follow Instructions After First Fatal Crash. They Did and Died Anyway.

Image
Baz Ratner/ReutersBoeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg issued an astonishing mea culpa on behalf of his company  after a report by Ethiopian air crash investigators added to the pressure on Boeing to prove that they have truly understood and fixed flaws in the flight control system of their new 737 MAX series of jets. On the heels of a previously anonymous company statement, Muilenburg said, “The history of our industry shows most accidents are caused by a chain of events. This again is the case here, and we know we can break one of those chain links in these two accidents. As pilots have told us, erroneous activation of the MCAS function can add to what is already a high workload environment. It’s our responsibility to eliminate this risk. We own it and we know how to do it.”In a preliminary report on the crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 on March 10 that killed 157 people, the investigators said that the pilots had followed recommended emergency procedures, but their efforts were overpo

Trump news – live: President attacks another dead Republican icon as Biden hits back over bizarre video tweet

Donald Trump has attacked the late former first lady Barbara Bush in a newspaper interview a day after posting a satirical alt-right meme of ex-vice-president Joe Biden on Twitter.“I see that you are on the job and presidential, as always,” Mr Biden responded witheringly to the tweet, which sits pinned to the top of the president’s Twitter profile. The video in question sends up Mr Biden’s apology after he was accused of inappropriate conduct towards female campaign staff and was circulated by Donald Trump Jr earlier on Thursday.Mr Trump is due in Calexico, California, on Friday to inspect construction work on his US-Mexico wall after rowing back on his threat to close the border, the trip providing a timely change of focus for the president after thousands of protesters campaigned outside the White House and in New York’s Times Square to demand the release of the Mueller report in full. Please allow a moment for our liveblog to load from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines htt

Ethiopian Airlines: Pilots followed Boeing emergency procedures but could not stop plane going down, report says

Image
Pilots of an airliner that crashed last month in Ethiopia initially followed Boeing's emergency steps for dealing with a sudden downturn of the nose of their plane but could not regain control, according to a published report. The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that pilots of the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max turned off a flight-control system but still couldn't get the plane to climb. They turned the system back on and tried other actions before the plane crashed, the paper said, citing people familiar with preliminary findings of the crash investigation. The findings were confirmed by Ethiopia Airlines on Thursday. In a statement, Boeing urged against speculating before the preliminary report and flight data from the plane are released. The Journal says the pilots' actions are still being evaluated by investigators but could raise questions about assertions made by Boeing and US regulators in the aftermath of another Max crash in October that pilots could rega

Court Ruling Implies That Barr Must Redact Grand-Jury Info from Mueller Report

Image
In disclosing the Mueller report, Attorney General William P. Barr will have to redact grand-jury information. That is the upshot of the ruling today by a divided panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.I flagged this case, now called McKeever v. Barr (formerly McKeever v. Sessions), last week. It did not arise out of the Mueller investigation, but it obviously has significant ramifications for the Mueller report -- in particular, how much of it we will get to see.At issue was this question: Does a federal court have the authority to order disclosure of grand-jury materials if the judge decides that the interests of justice warrant doing so; or is the judge limited to the exceptions to grand-jury secrecy that are spelled out in Rule 6(e) of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure? The D.C. Circuit’s McKeever ruling holds that the text of Rule 6(e) controls. Consequently, judges have no authority to authorize disclosure outside the rule. This is significant for the Muelle

UPDATE 7-Ethiopian crash report highlights sensors, software, leaves questions

ADDIS ABABA/SEATTLE, April 4 (Reuters) - Faulty sensor readings and multiple automatic commands to push down the nose of a Boeing plane contributed to last month's fatal crash in Ethiopia, leaving the crew struggling to regain control, according to a preliminary accident report. The first substantial account of the last minutes of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi on March 10 described how the captain three times called out: "Pull up" and was acknowledged by the first officer, but to no avail. Boeing's top-selling aircraft, the 787 MAX, has been grounded worldwide since the March 10 disaster, which killed 157 people and came just five months after a Lion Air crash in Indonesia that killed 189 in a plane of the same model. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2UulZU9 via Latest News

Dem. Rep. Bashes Green New Deal: ‘There’s No Need to Lie to Voters’

Image
Representative Max Rose (D., N.Y.) lambasted fellow New York freshman Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Wednesday for using the threat of climate change to advance a “massive socialist economic-policy platform” via the Green New Deal plan she introduced earlier this year.Rose, during a Wednesday interview on New York's local Metro Focus program, agreed with Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow progressives that climate change is an existential threat that requires a commensurate response, but argued that the federal-jobs and housing guarantees included in the plan are not necessary to combat climate change.“This is not the time for milquetoast incrementalism,” Rose said. “It just isn't.
