India bids to bust citizenship law 'myths' with cartoon Muslims

Image
India's ruling party launched a video with animated Muslim characters on social media Monday as part of a publicity blitz to try to bust "myths" around a new citizenship law that has sparked deadly protests. The law has stoked concerns that Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government wants to marginalise India's Muslim minority. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/391MR2a via Latest News

Banksy takes politically charged Nativity scene to Bethlehem

Image
The mysterious street artist known as Banksy has displayed a politically charged Nativity scene in Bethlehem, the town revered as Jesus' birthplace, just in time for the busy Christmas season. The artwork, named “Scar of Bethlehem,” depicts the birth of Jesus under Israel's West Bank separation barrier with a bullet hole shaped like a star. The piece is displayed at the “Walled Off Hotel,” a Palestinian guesthouse in Bethlehem that was designed by Banksy and is filled with his artwork. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/34LSH4y via Latest News

Clashes as police try to clear Hong Kong protesters after Uighur support rally

Hong Kong riot police pepper sprayed protesters to disperse crowds in the heart of the city's financial district on Sunday after a largely peaceful rally in support of China's ethnic Uighurs turned chaotic. Dozens of police marched across a public square overlooking Hong Kong's harbor to face off with protesters who hurled glass bottles and rocks at them. A mixed crowd of young and elderly people, dressed in black and wearing masks to shield their identities, held up signs reading "Free Uyghur, Free Hong Kong" and "Fake 'autonomy' in China results in genocide". from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2SoGgsV via Latest News

The Venezuelan Doctor Fighting Malaria and Maduro

Image
CARACAS—The government thugs stormed Dr. Oscar Noya's offices late at night when nobody was around. They knocked down a wall, stole some fresh scientific records and even yanked out the electric cables. The whole malaria department at the Tropical Medicine Institute here was plunged into darkness. It wasn’t the first time something like this has happened. The government of Nicolás Maduro doesn’t like the institute’s scientific findings, which show a huge increase in malaria cases, a deadly metric of this country’s disarray. The Maduro regime’s thugs, known as colectivos, set out to intimidate anyone and anything seen as a threat. But this is a particularly striking example of autocracy out to demean and defeat science, no matter how many lives are at stake. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas in Maduro’s Venezuela, but Only if You’ve Got U.S. DollarsThe day after the malaria department was pillaged, I met with Dr. Noya as he was surveying the damage. He didn't appear to b...

Young democrats shake up pro-Beijing stronghold in Hong Kong

Image
For decades it was known as Little Shanghai, a gritty, waterfront neighborhood that was the landing spot for many mainland Chinese emigrating to Hong Kong. Densely packed with dilapidated, high-rise apartment blocks looming above bustling neon-lit streets, North Point has long been known as one of the "reddest" – or most pro-Beijing – districts in Hong Kong. During anti-government demonstrations in Hong Kong this year, the district was the scene of street brawls between men in white T-shirts - believed to be pro-Beijing supporters – and black-clad protesters. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2sWAS5z via Latest News

Prince Charles says of Prince Philip 'when you get to that age things don't work so well'

Image
The Duke of Edinburgh is being looked after "very well" in hospital, his oldest son the Prince of Wales has said. Prince Philip has spent a third night at the King Edward VII's Hospital in central London for treatment relating to a "pre-existing condition". The duke's planned admission on Friday to the private central London hospital, which has been treating members of the royal family for decades, was described as a "precautionary measure" by Buckingham Palace. During a visit to flood-hit communities in South Yorkshire on Monday, Charles was asked about his father's health by a reporter. "He's being looked after very well in hospital," Charles replied. "At the moment that's all we know." During the visit, a woman in Fishlake asked Charles: "Sir, how is your father?" He replied: "Alright. When you get to that age things don't work so well." The Queen did not change her schedule as a result of ...

A Rape Victim’s Stunning Victory Against Japan’s Powerful ‘Weinsteins’

Image
TOKYO–A civil court here handed down a landmark ruling last week in the case of freelance journalist Shiori Ito, 30, who alleged she was raped in 2015 by a Noriyuki Yamaguchi, 53, a good friend and biographer of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The court ruled Yamaguchi must pay over ¥3.3 million yen ($30,000)  in damages. Since Ito went public with the charges in 2017 after police efforts to pursue the case were quashed, she has become a vital symbol for the still fledgling MeToo movement in Japan; her story is a microcosm of the problems women face here in a nation where there are far too many men who share the attitudes of a Harvey Weinstein.Japan’s Big MeToo Moment: You Think Hollywood Abuses Women? You Oughta See Tokyo.Yet this victory in a civil case also reopens the very ugly question of why Yamaguchi never was prosecuted for his alleged crime. The police had a warrant prepared on sexual assault charges and were planning to arrest Yamaguchi at Narita airport on June 8, 2015, ...

US soldier is killed in Afghanistan; Taliban claim attack

Image
An American service member was killed in combat Monday in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said, without providing further details, while the Taliban claimed they were behind a roadside bombing in northern Kunduz province that killed the U.S. soldier. The latest fatality brings the number of U.S. deaths in Afghanistan this year to 20. The Taliban now control or hold sway over practically half of Afghanistan but continue to stage near-daily attacks targeting Afghan and U.S. forces, as well as government officials — even as they hold peace talks with a U.S. envoy tasked with negotiating an end to what has become America's longest war. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/35P6RDd via Latest News

Trump news: President says he 'never understood wind' as China attacks Space Force as threat to peace

Image
Donald Trump’s conduct in the Ukraine scandal has been called further into question as newly released, heavily redacted internal emails reveal the fears of defence officials and diplomats that his order to withhold military aid could breach spending laws.Released under court order to the Centre for Public Integrity, the explosive correspondence also showed the White House asked the Pentagon to quietly suspend Congress-approved military aid to the country just 90 minutes after Mr Trump’s call with Volodymyr Zelensky. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2tN5gQb via Latest News

Legionaries founder sexually abused 60 boys, religious order's report says

Image
Sexual abuse of minors was rife among superiors of the Legionaries of Christ Catholic religious order, with at least 60 boys abused by its founder Father Marcial Maciel, a report by the group showed. The report is important because for decades until 2006, including during all of the pontificate of Pope John Paul, the Vatican dismissed accusations by seminarians that Maciel had abused them sexually, some when they were as young as 12. The order said the report, which was released on Saturday and covers the period since Maciel founded it in his native Mexico in 1941 to this year, was "an additional attempt (by the Legionaries) to confront their history". from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/3991ocC via Latest News

Pelosi's impeachment endgame

Image
Don't worry, America. There will be an impeachment trial for President Trump in the U.S. Senate — and it will happen sooner rather than later.Yes, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is spending the holidays hoarding the articles of impeachment and refusing to formally transmit them to the Senate. She is instead using them as leverage to pressure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) into adopting rules that gives Democrats a chance to call witnesses like acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and former National Security Advisor John Bolton."As long as it takes," House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) told CNN last week. "Even if he (McConnell) doesn't come around to committing to a fair trial, keep those articles here."That won't work for long, though, and Pelosi surely knows it.For one thing, McConnell is unique among politicians in resisting pressure to do anything he doesn't want to do. The man who denied a Supreme Court confirmation...

Xiaomi's 108 MP Mi Note 10 Pro reaches Spain, yours for €559.99

Image
Xiaomi's Mi Note 10 Pro has finally become available in Spain today. The phone is basically identical to the non-Pro Mi Note 10, it just comes with more RAM and storage - 8/256GB, compared to the vanilla model's 6/128GB combo. Additionally, the main sensor has an 8P lens compared to 7P. Yes, that is literally it, and no, we don't know why such a small change required it to get the word "Pro" tacked onto its name either. Anyway, if you're interested, know that its usual selling price in Spain is €649.99. However, right now you can purchase it from FNAC for just €559.99, although this may be... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2EPGTn2 via IFTTT
