What you need to know about the coronavirus right now

Image
Several districts of the Chinese capital put up security checkpoints, closed schools and ordered people to be tested for the novel coronavirus on Monday after an unexpected spike of cases linked to the biggest wholesale food market in Asia. After nearly two months with no new infections, Beijing officials have reported 79 cases over the past four days, the city's biggest cluster of infections since February. "The containment efforts have rapidly entered into a war-time mode," senior city government official Xu Ying told a news conference. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2UM8ZIe via Latest News

De Blasio Tells Covid Contract Tracers Not to Ask Positive Cases If They’ve Attended BLM Protests

Image
New York City’s coronavirus contact-tracing force are not asking those who test positive for COVID-19 whether they recently attended a Black Lives Matter demonstration, a city spokesperson confirmed.“No person will be asked proactively if they attended a protest,” Avery Cohen, a spokesperson for de Blasio, told THE CITY about the directive. “If a person wants to proactively offer that information, there is an opportunity for them to do so.”De Blasio, who announced his program last month to hire 1,000 “contact tracers,” has promised to reveal Monday how many city residents have been questioned so far.Tracers are supposed to ask those who test positive for Covid-19 to “recall ‘contacts’ and individuals they may have exposed,” Cohen explained. Tracers also probe for any “close contacts” of the patient — anyone that has been within six feet of the infected person for at least 10 minutes.New York City officials have taken a soft stance over fears that mass protests could lead to a spike in

Trump news – live: President hails post-lockdown US retail boom as Mike Pence insists campaign has ‘right’ to hold rally despite coronavirus fears

Image
Donald Trump has hailed a 17.7 per cent rise in retail sales in the US for May as the states moved to reopen following the national shutdown in response to the coronavirus pandemic, despite ongoing concerns that having done so prematurely risks inspiring a second wave of the deadly virus, which has already claimed 117,000 American lives.Vice president Mike Pence has been moving to dispel concerns about the further spread of Covid-19 at Trump’s upcoming return to the campaign trail in Tulsa, Oklahoma, insisting the president has a “right” to gather his supporters a day after falsely claiming the state had successfully “flattened the curve” of infections. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/37CVVdI via Latest News

Black Lives Matter banner removed at US Embassy in Seoul

Image
A large Black Lives Matter banner was quietly removed from the U.S. Embassy building in South Korea's capital three days after it was raised there in solidarity with demonstrators protesting against racial inequality back home. The official explanation from the embassy, which didn't mention an LGBT pride flag that was also removed from the building, was that the Black Lives Matter banner was removed to avoid any perception that it was meant “to support or encourage donations to any specific organization.” The decision drew criticism from some activists in Seoul. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/3hAEqiO via Latest News

U.S. Supreme Court snubs Trump on challenge to California 'sanctuary' laws

Image
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday handed President Donald Trump a defeat in his legal showdown with the most-populous U.S. state, declining to hear his administration's challenge to "sanctuary" laws in California that protect immigrants from deportation. The justices left in place a lower court ruling that upheld the bulk of three laws in the Democratic-governed state that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement authorities. Trump, seeking re-election on Nov. 3, has made his hardline immigration policies a focus of his presidency, including a crackdown on legal and illegal immigration. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/3foUaDu via Latest News

Why Is North Korea Starting a Crisis Now?

Image
Something is going on in the North that is, as yet, invisible to outside observers. Remember that Kim Jong-un disappeared for three weeks in April-May, and has only rarely been seen since. His sister, Kim Yo-jong, has suddenly taken on a much more prominent—and much more militant—role in governing the country, even apparently taking it upon herself to issue orders to the military in her own name. Is brother Kim sick? Is sister Kim taking over the family business? from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2CeebhO via Latest News
