Samsung Galaxy Z Flip debuts in India, ships on February 26

Image
The Galaxy Z Flip seems to have exceeded Samsung's sales expectations, at least in some parts of the world including the US. It remains to be seen if it's going to manage to be as successful in India, but we'll soon find out. Today the Korean company officially introduced its second foldable smartphone in the subcontinent. Like elsewhere, there's only one version of the Z Flip, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It's priced at INR 1,09,999, which right now translates into $1,525 or €1,422. That means it's more expensive in India than in the US, but cheaper than in the EU.... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/3a2yVov via IFTTT

‘Be Wary of Authoritarian Regimes’: Pompeo Warns African Allies Not to Rely on China

Image
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday cautioned African nations against allowing too much influence from China, saying an economic partnership with the U.S. would better serve the nations."Be wary of authoritarian regimes and their empty promises," Pompeo said in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in a reference to China. Pompeo asserted cooperation with the U.S. represented a path toward "true liberation."The comments come days after China expelled three Wall Street Journal reporters from the country in response to an opinion column in the paper that labeled China "the sick man of Asia."Pompeo's remarks capped a three-day trip to Ethiopia, Senegal and Angola, during which the secretary of state pushed for economic liberalization and the support of American businesses including Citibank, Chevron and Coca-Cola.The U.S.'s top diplomat also criticized the "failed socialist experiments of years past" that were attempted in some African nations.Howe

Afghanistan’s Ghani Declared Winner in Contested Election

Image
(Bloomberg) -- Afghanistan’s incumbent president, Ashraf Ghani, has been declared the winner of a disputed presidential vote that’s been tainted by accusations of vote-rigging.Ghani led the poll with 50.64% of the 1.8 million votes cast, defeating his top rival Abdullah Abdullah, who obtained 39.52% in the bitterly contested poll that began on Sept. 28, Hawa Alam Nuristani, the chairwoman of the election commission, said on Tuesday evening.Abdullah, who’s the chief executive of the war-torn country and shares power with the incumbent, accused Ghani of rigging about 300,000 votes in his favor. On Tuesday Abdullah rejected the outcome and said he considers the results “unlawful.”“The results of the elections is the result of an election-rigging, a coup over democracy and betrayal over people’s will, and we consider the results as unlawful,” Abdullah, who declared himself the victor, told supporters a few hours after the announcement of the results.Despite Abdullah’s concerns, the electio

Democratic socialist Bernie Sanders is too far left for Sweden's ruling Social Democrats, official says

Image
Johan Hassel, the international secretary for Sweden's ruling Social Democrats, visited Iowa before the caucuses, and he wasn't impressed with America's standard bearer for democratic socialism, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.). "We were at a Sanders event, and it was like being at a Left Party meeting," he told Sweden's Svenska Dagbladet newspaper, according to one translation. "It was a mixture of very young people and old Marxists, who think they were right all along. There were no ordinary people there, simply."Hassel was most "impressed" with Pete Buttigieg, though he also liked Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). Eric Kleefeld, assiduous student of foreign politics, provides some context on Sweden's Social Democrats:> Some more context: The “Left Party” he talks about in there is the old Communist Party back home in Sweden. Execution for a Facebook post? Why blasphemy is a capital offense in some Muslim countries

Image
Junaid Hafeez, a university lecturer in Pakistan, had been imprisoned for six years when he was sentenced to death in December 2019. The charge: blasphemy, specifically insulting Prophet Muhammad on Facebook. Pakistan has the world’s second strictest blasphemy laws after Iran, according to U.S. Commision on International Religious Freedom.Hafeez, whose death sentence is under appeal, is one of about 1,500 Pakistanis charged with blasphemy, or sacrilegious speech, over the last three decades. No executions have taken place. But since 1990 70 people have been murdered by mobs and vigilantes who accused them of insulting Islam. Several people who defend the accused have been killed, too, including one of Hafeez’s lawyers and two high-level politicians who publicly opposed the death sentence of Asia Bibi, a Christian woman convicted for verbally insulting Prophet Muhammad. Though Bibi was acquitted in 2019, she fled Pakistan. Blasphemy and apostasyOf 71 countries that criminalize blasphemy
