In new gaffe, White House hopeful Biden says running for 'Senate'

Image
Joe Biden's White House bid has been rocked by a series of verbal slip-ups days before South Carolina's Democratic primary, a make-or-break contest as the former vice president struggles to reverse his campaign's slide. Eclipsed by a surging Bernie Sanders, Biden suggested to supporters Monday that he was campaigning "for the United States Senate" -- where he served for 36 years, until a decade ago. Biden also blundered by saying he had negotiated the 2015 Paris climate accord with China's Deng Xiaoping, who died in 1997. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/37Vsbat via Latest News

Rush Limbaugh: coronavirus a 'common cold' being 'weaponised' against Trump

Image
* Rightwing shock jock rails at ‘effort to bring down Trump’ * More than 2,700 people have died from virus worldwideThe coronavirus outbreak is being “weaponised” by the media to bring down Donald Trump when in fact it is simply a version of the “common cold”, the conservative radio host and presidential medal of freedom recipient Rush Limbaugh claimed on Monday. His comments were widely condemned: more than 80,000 people are known to have contracted the virus worldwide and 2,700 are known to have died. Authorities are struggling to cope in China, Iran, Italy and Tenerife. The World Health Organization has not yet declared the outbreak, which originated in China, a pandemic. On Tuesday, Professor Mary-Louise McLaws, an infection control expert who has advised the WHO, told the Guardian: “Part of the reason for declaring a pandemic, if they do declare one, would be to get the critical mass on board to take it seriously and not ignore symptoms, and to get the finances required to help tackl

CDC Issues Warnings on Virus; Markets Take Hit: Virus Update

John Bolton tries to slam Bernie Sanders for Castro remarks, rams headlong into more recent history

Image
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) got some blowback Monday for comments he made on Sunday's 60 Minutes in favor of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro's literacy program. It's not clear many people outside of Florida or under age 70 have strong feelings about Castro anymore — he died in 2016, after all, and Cuba is now mostly known as a hot vacation spot. And as Sanders also said on 60 Minutes, it's not like he thinks current, nuclear-armed despot "Kim Jong Un is a good friend," and unlike President Trump. "I don't trade love letters with a murdering dictator."Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton clearly did not pay attention to that last part of the interview when he jumped in to slam Sanders for "revealing the extent of his extremism" by suggesting "Castro's communist Cuba is not all bad." So Twitter reminded him.> pic.twitter.com/N3BVcFUKX5> > — subscribe to my newsletter (@brianbeutler) February 24, 2

Health Officials Expect U.S. Coronavirus Outbreak: ‘It’s More of a Question of When’

Image
U.S. officials admitted Tuesday that the United States is likely to suffer a coronavirus outbreak, one day after the Trump administration requested $2.5 billion to help slow the spread of the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that it now expects a large increase in U.S. cases, and urged Americans to prepare for “the expectation that this might be bad.”Nancy Messonnier, the director of the Center DC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said that “it’s not so much of a question of if this will happen in this country any more but a question of when this will happen.” She also warned that “the disruption of daily life might be severe.”The Trump administration has delivered a mixed response on the virus, with U.S. health secretary Alex Azar admitting during a Senate hearing on Tuesday that “we cannot hermetically seal off the United States to a virus . . . and we need to be realistic about that.” Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wol

Senate Rejects 20-Week Abortion Ban

Image
The Senate on Tuesday rejected two Republican abortion bills, one that would outlaw abortions after 20 weeks and another that would attempt to raise the standard of care for newborns born alive after botched abortions.Senators voted 53 to 44 against a motion to proceed to debate on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, failing to reach the 60 votes required to overcome the Democratic filibuster against the measure. The bill, sponsored by Senator Lindsey Graham, would have made illegal all abortions performed after 20 weeks of pregnancy -- the point at which pro-life advocates argue science determines a fetus can feel pain -- with exceptions for when the life of the mother is in danger and for victims of rape and incest.“There are only seven countries that allow wholesale abortions at the 20-week period, including China and North Korea,” Graham said in a tweet before the vote. “The United States should NOT be in that club.“President Trump voiced his support for the legislation in

'D.C. Sniper' Malvo can seek parole after change in Virginia law

Image
Lee Boyd Malvo, who was 17 when he took part in the deadly 2002 "D.C. Sniper" shooting spree in the Washington area, will get a chance to seek parole in Virginia following a change in state law enacted on Monday, preempting a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on the matter. The change, signed by Democratic Governor Ralph Northam, allows people like Malvo, now 35, who were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for offenses committed before age 18 to ask for release after 20 years. Malvo, who is incarcerated in a supermax state prison in Virginia's Wise County, and an older accomplice, John Allen Muhammad, were convicted in the shootings in which 10 people were killed. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2w1g2mW via Latest News

Suit seeks to remove Sanders from Florida Democratic ballot

Image
In a state where elections and litigation are intertwined, add this to Florida's ballot box saga: A pair of Floridians are asking a court to remove Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Democratic front-runner for president, from the state's March 17 primary ballot. Although Sanders is registered as a Democrat with the Federal Election Commission, a lawsuit filed in Leon County asserts he is a political interloper and not a bona fide Democrat. Sanders, who has spent three decades in the U.S. Capitol, first as a congressman and now as a senator representing Vermont, has steadfastly refused to formally identify as a Democrat, even if he caucuses with the party. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Vp5TuW via Latest News
