'Jayme is the hero' sheriff says of Wisconsin girl who escaped captor

Image
Thousands of volunteers and hundreds of law enforcement officers had searched around the clock around the small town of Barron after Jayme Closs' parents were found shot dead in their home, the front door open and the girl gone. Relying on what Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald called "the will of a kid to survive," a disheveled Closs escaped a house in the tiny town of Gordon where she had been held captive, about 60 miles (100 km) north of Barron. US shutdown stokes air safety fears

Image
The partial shutdown of the US government could have serious consequences for air safety, according to unions representing aviation workers, which are calling for an immediate resolution to the budgetary stalemate. Some 800,000 federal employees, including those from the Department of Transport and the Department of Homeland Security which handles air safety and oversees screening at airport checkpoints, have been affected since December 22 when the impasse over President Donald Trump's demand for a southern border wall opposed by Democrats in Congress began. "This is a matter of safety, security, and economic concern," said the Association of Flight Attendants, which held a protest in the capital Washington on Thursday along with other aviation sector unions, to demand the resumption of normal services. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2VDy5YG via Latest News

Astronomers spot black hole spinning unbelievably fast as it swallows up a star

Image
Black holes are some of the most interesting features of our universe, but they're also not very well understood. Studying distant black holes in any great detail is very difficult due to the fact that nothing, including light, can escape their grasp once its gets too close. Now, a black hole sitting some 290 million light years from Earth has offered scientists the rare opportunity to measure its speed, and the numbers are mind-boggling. Researchers using the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae telescope network detected "a burst of light" from a specific spot in the sky back in 2014. Upon closer inspection and observations using additional instruments, scientists determined that the blast of X-ray energy was coming from a star, but not just any star. This star was in the midst of being torn apart by a black hole. The star itself had no hope of escaping the black hole's grasp once it drifted into its event horizon -- the area around a black hole from which nothin...

FBI says operations threatened by US govt shutdown

Image
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents warned Thursday that the ongoing partial shutdown of the government is threatening their ability to investigate crimes and maintain staffing. "Special Agents remain at work for the American people without being paid, and FBI leadership is doing all it can to fund FBI operations with increasingly limited resources -- this situation is not sustainable," the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA) said in a statement. The association represents the nearly 13,000 active special agents -- the FBI's core investigation force that probes everything from violent and financial crimes to espionage and terrorism. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2skkqsj via Latest News

Saudi teen who fled family leaves Thailand for asylum in Canada

Image
Trudeau said United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) had asked Canada to take in Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, who grabbed international attention this week after she barricaded herself in a Bangkok airport hotel room to resist being sent home to her family, which denies any abuse. "Canada is a country that understands how important it is to stand up for human rights, to stand up for women's rights around the world, and I can confirm that we have accepted the U.N.'s request," he told reporters. The decision is likely to exacerbate Canada's already poor relations with Saudi Arabia, which last year barred the Canadian ambassador to Riyadh after Ottawa criticized Saudi authorities for detaining women's' activists. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2D5EIvK via Latest News

Landowner Eloisa Cavazos told the Associated Press that she won’t sell her land along the Rio Grande River to the government at any price.
