Turkey fires thousands of civil servants ahead of Erdogan's swearing-in

Image
The Turkish government on Sunday sacked more than  18,000 civil servants for alleged links to terror groups, as it prepared to lift the state of emergency in the wake of the 2016 failed coup.  Nearly 9,000 police officers, 6,000 members of the military and 199 academics from across Turkey are among the people summarily dismissed in a decree published in the Official Gazette. Their passports will be cancelled. The dismissals came the day before President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was to be sworn in for his second term, following his victory in last month’s presidential election. Mr Erdogan has overseen a series of purges since the July 2016 attempted coup, which saw parts of the Turkish military launch an operation to topple the government and oust its leader. Turkey blames exiled preacher and businessmen Fethullah Gulen for the attempted power grab and cracked down decisively, implementing a state of emergency and using enhanced powers to sack scores of civil servants. Britain must be free to maintain leading position in services after Brexit: May

Image
Britain must be free to protect its leading position in the services sector, including finance, after it leaves the European Union, Prime Minister Theresa May said on Monday. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson quit on Monday over May's plan for Brexit, which includes a free-trade area for goods but little detail on the approach to services. "On services, we want to be free to ensure that we are able to put in place what we believe is necessary to maintain our key position in services, not least on the financial services." May told parliament in a heated session that her plan was "not a betrayal" of the referendum vote. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2m6D2sq via Latest News

Latest Phone APK teardown reveals feature for screening robo-calls

Image
The guys over at XDA-Developers have performed an APK teardown of the latest Google Phone APK (version 22). This is the default telephony app that is used on Google's Nexus and Pixel devices. The latest feature slated for this dialer is a call-screening feature that would keep spam calls from interrupting you. According to the teardown, the Phone app's new feature is called "Call Screen" and it will apparently work without the need for an active WI-Fi or data connection - to do this, it will use a real-time audio transcription of the incoming call to warn you if the call has a robot at the... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2zm1lMo via IFTTT

EU says Google can't force OEMs to set Chrome and Google Search as default apps

Image
Google requires OEMs to comply with certain requirements in order to qualify to run the Google Play Store. Among these requirements is one that the EU's chief competition regulator doesn't agree with. This is the requirement that OEMs have to have Google Chrome and Google Search preinstalled. This means if OEMs don't comply to pre-install Google apps, they will not be allowed to run the Google Play Store. Margerethe Vestager is the EU's competition chief and she argues that Google's requirement ensures its own dominance in its own internet ecosystem of services. Apple outs new video ad for Face ID on the iPhone X

Image
Apple has released a new video ad for the iPhone X, and specifically its Face ID biometric feature that replaces the Touch ID fingerprint sensor seen on older iPhones. As you can see, it has a fun gameshow vibe, and it's basically all about a man trying to remember the password he set for an online account. Spoiler alert: he doesn't actually need to remember the password because he has an iPhone X, and, to quote Apple in the ad, "your face is your password" in that case. from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2u7sZIc via IFTTT
