William Barr Delivers Chilling Message to FBI for Trump

Image
Photo Illustration by Lyne Lucien/The Daily Beast/Photos from Getty/APIf you come at the king, you best not miss. That’s the message Attorney General William Barr is sending to FBI agents, whether intentionally or not. Barr has authorized yet another investigation into the FBI’s conduct probing links between Russian election interference and the Trump campaign. Even though two other entities are already investigating the same matter, reports indicate that Barr has appointed Connecticut U.S. Attorney John Durham to investigate the origins of the Russia probe. In doing so, Barr is playing into the hands of President Donald Trump, who has already characterized Durham’s assignment as an investigation into “how that whole hoax got started.” The most charitable interpretation of Barr’s behavior in defense of Trump is that he believes strongly in a “unitary executive,” where the president can order any investigation he wants. But in his quest to protect the presidency, Barr is damaging our na...

US orders non-emergency embassy staff to leave Baghdad, Arbil

Image
The US State Department on Wednesday ordered all non-emergency staff to leave its embassy in Baghdad and consulate in Arbil, as tensions mount between the United States and Iraq's neighbor Iran. Washington has ramped up pressure on Tehran in recent days, accusing Iran of planning "imminent" attacks in the region, and bolstering the American military presence in the Gulf. "Numerous terrorist and insurgent groups are active in Iraq and regularly attack both Iraqi security forces and civilians," a travel advisory warned. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2JpzcIG via Latest News

Polish Catholic Church expects 'wave' of child sex abuse reports after release of film on paedophilia

Image
Poland's Catholic Church says it is expecting a "wave" of reports of child sex abuse by priests as it struggles to cope with the impact of a new film on paedophilia in the church that has been seen by millions. The crowd-funded two-hour-long film 'Just Don't Tell Anyone' has so far had over 14 million views on YouTube in just three days, and proved to be a sensation in Poland while appearing to deliver a hammer blow to the moral credibility of the Catholic Church. The film, which hears the accounts of victims and some confessions from their abusers, has already prompted Archbishop Stanislaw Gadecki, the head of Poland’s episcopate, to issue an apology to “all those harmed” but now the Church appears to be bracing itself for an avalanche of sexual abuse allegations. “So far Poland has not seen the huge increases in reported cases as seen in other countries,” said Father Piotr Studnicki, from the Church’s Centre for Child Protection, during a television intervie...

UPDATE 1-Ford to build more Lincolns for Chinese market locally -CFO

Ford Motor Co plans to start production of new luxury Lincoln models in China for that market as they are launched, starting with the new Corsair later this year, to benefit from lower costs and avoid the risk of tariffs, a top executive said on Monday. "It's a huge, huge opportunity for Lincoln because we see China as Ground Zero for Lincoln given the size of the market and how well the brand has been received," Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said at a Goldman Sachs conference in New York. Ford has lower levels of localized production than rivals General Motors Co or Volkswagen AG, who make more vehicles in China for Chinese consumers, benefiting from lower labor and material costs, and avoiding tariffs in the burgeoning trade war between the United States and China. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2WT7mYc via Latest News

Trump administration planning Iran military response that echoes Iraq invasion

Image
At a meeting of President Donald Trump’s top national security aides last Thursday, Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan presented an updated military plan that envisions sending as many as 120,000 troops to the Middle East should Iran attack US forces or accelerate work on nuclear weapons, administration officials said. The revisions were ordered by hard-liners led by John Bolton, Mr Trump’s national security adviser. It does not call for a land invasion of Iran, which would require vastly more troops, officials said. The development reflects the influence of Mr Bolton, one of the administration’s most virulent Iran hawks, whose push for confrontation with Tehran was ignored more than a decade ago by President George W. Bush.It is highly uncertain whether Mr Trump, who has sought to disentangle the United States from Afghanistan and Syria, ultimately would send so many US forces back to the Middle East.It is also unclear whether the president has been briefed on the number of troop...

Middle East Oil War Cometh: Pipelines and Tankers Under Attack (Is Iran To Blame?)

Image
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia claims that drones attacked an oil pipeline on Tuesday, causing a severe fire that disrupted oil operations. The attack is just one of many recent assaults on oil industry in the region, coming not long after four oil tankers were sabotaged while anchored in the Mideast.Yemeni rebels are claiming responsibility for a drone attack, and Saudi officials report that two oil infrastructure sites near the capital of Riyadh were targeted at the time of the pipeline attack. In regards to the Saudi, Norwegian and Emirati oil tankers that were attacked, US military assessment indicated that Iranian-affiliated agents used explosives to blow holes in the ships.According to the New York Post, the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, which patrols the region, has repeatedly declined to comment.Several B-52 bombers and the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike fleet were recently deployed to the region, and the US has considered sending up to 120,000 troops to the region in case ...

Pilots pushed Boeing to act after Lion Air crash: reports

Image
After a deadly crash in Indonesia, American Airlines pilots called a meeting to press Boeing executives for safety changes to the 737 MAX aircraft, US media reported Tuesday. The call for changes, which could have required the best-selling aircraft model to be temporarily grounded, were reported by The New York Times and CBS News after they obtained an audio recording of the November 27 meeting between the American Airlines pilots union and officials from the aircraft manufacturer. The 737 MAX 8 is currently grounded worldwide after the March crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 that killed all 157 people onboard and drew scrutiny to the new Boeing model's anti-stall system, which investigators believe may have brought the jet down. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2VvvlLW via Latest News

Clarence Thomas Just Showed How Supreme Court Would Overturn Roe v. Wade

Image
Jason Reed/ReutersIn 1992, the Supreme Court looked poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark case protecting abortion rights. They didn’t, however, and the main reason was respect for precedent—specifically, the legal doctrine known as stare decisis, or “let the decision stand.” Would it do the same today, with over 250 laws meant to test the case pending in states across the country? An otherwise obscure case decided this week, Franchise Tax Board of California v. Hyatt, suggests that a majority of the court would not. Hyatt was, in large part, about stare decisis. A 1979 Supreme Court case, Nevada v. Hall, held that citizens can sue a state in another state’s court. In 1998, Gilbert Hyatt did just that as part of a tax dispute, with tens of millions of dollars at stake. This week, the court overruled its 1979 decision by a vote of 5-4 and tossed out Hyatt’s claim. The split was on ideological lines, with the court’s five conservatives in the majority and four liberals in the minor...

Pennyslvania sues maker of OxyContin, 'jet fuel' of America's opioid crisis

Lawsuit is the first against Purdue Pharma to allege in detail a prolific and calculated scheme of pushing drugs on prescribers The Pennsylvania attorney general, Josh Shapiro, arrives at a news conference in Philadelphia, 14 May 2019. In the next five years, his prescriptions of OxyContin – the “jet fuel” of America’s opioid crisis, according to Pennsylvania’s attorney general – increased by 600%, as Purdue reps visited two to three times a week. Now, a lawsuit in the state seeks to hold the company accountable. The lawsuit, filed 2 May by the state attorney general, Josh Shapiro, and announced on Tuesday, accuses Purdue Pharma, the Connecticut-based maker of OxyContin, of deceptive marketing and criminal negligence in pushing doctors to prescribe the opioid. “We’ve lost lives, we’ve lost money and we’ve squandered opportunity,” said Shapiro in a press confe...

Trump's attempts to rally allies against Iran falls flat with UK official who says there's no threat

Image
As the Trump administration draws up war plans against Iran over what it says are threats to US troops and interests, a senior British military official told reporters at the Pentagon on Tuesday that he saw no increased risk from Iran or allied militias in Iraq or Syria.A few hours later, the US Central Command issued an unusual rebuke. The remarks from the British official — Major General Chris Ghika, who is also the deputy commander of the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State — run “counter to the identified credible threats available to intelligence from US and allies regarding Iranian-backed forces in the region.”The rare public dispute highlights a central problem for the Trump administration as it seeks to rally allies and global opinion against Iran.Over the past year, Washington has said Iran is threatening US interests in the Middle East, encouraging aggression by Shiite militias in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria, shipping missiles to Houthi rebels in Yemen and allowing its na...

Russia Might Take the Biggest Submarine Ever and Add 200 Cruise Missiles

Thus, while the idea of Russia reviving its cold war leviathans sounds compellingly scary, there’s evidence it makes little practical or financial sense given more cost-efficient and survivable means to achieve the same ends. It could also be the project is being trumpeted for the propagandistic symbolism behind deploying super-submarines that are larger and carry more missiles than their American counterparts. On April 20, 2019, Russia’s TASS Agency reported that Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev announced Russia’s intention to take two of its decommissioned Typhoon-class ballistic submarines and pack them full of hundreds of cruise missiles.(This first appeared last month.)“The dimensions of these submarines allow arming each of them with at least 200 cruise missiles [each],” he said. The Typhoon ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), famously featured in the film Hunt for Red October, are by far the biggest and most expensive submarines ever built. Lou Dobbs to Trump: Why Not Threaten Military Strikes Against Iran’s Oil Industry?

Image
Fox Business host and Trump whisperer Lou Dobbs appeared to nudge President Trump toward threatening Iran with military strikes on Tuesday night, saying the president shouldn’t get involved in a ground war but instead make it clear that he’ll turn the nation’s oil industry into “dust.”The New York Times reported Monday the White House is mulling a plan that would send 120,000 troops to the Middle East if Iran attacks U.S. forces or ramps up nuclear weapon development, prompting Trump to attack the Times as “fake news” on Tuesday before doubling down and saying he’d order “a hell of a lot more” troops than that. During his Fox Business Network show Lou Dobbs Tonight, Dobbs—who is regularly patched in to Trump’s Oval Office meetings—said the president is not interested in a ground war with Iran but “he’s not going to put up with any more nonsense.”Claiming that two presidents before Trump “put up with the killing of thousands of our troops in Iraq by Iran,” Dobbs turned to former Trump a...
