Amid coronavirus pandemic, black mistrust of medicine looms

Image
Just as the new coronavirus was declared a global pandemic, gym members in New York City frantically called the fitness center where Rahmell Peebles worked, asking him to freeze their memberships. Peebles, a 30-year-old black man who’s skeptical of what he hears from the news media and government, initially didn’t see the need for alarm over the virus. “I felt it was a complete hoax,” Peebles said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2x7ipW6 via Latest News

'Complete collapse of economies' ahead as Africa faces virus

Image
Some of Uganda’s poorest people used to work here, on the streets of Kampala, as fruit sellers sitting on the pavement or as peddlers of everything from handkerchiefs to roasted peanuts. Now they're gone and no one knows when they will return, victims of a global economic crisis linked to the coronavirus that could wipe out jobs for millions across the African continent, many who live hand-to-mouth with zero savings. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/39Kd18X via Latest News

Canada PM says will not retaliate against U.S. over block of mask exports

Why wear face masks in public? Here's what the research shows

Image
With the coronavirus pandemic quickly spreading, U.S. health officials have changed their advice on face masks and now recommend people wear cloth masks in public areas where social distancing can be difficult, such as grocery stores. But can these masks be effective?President Donald Trump, in announcing the change in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance on April 3, stressed that the recommendation was voluntary and said he probably wouldn’t follow it. Governors and mayors, however, have started encouraging the precautions to reduce the spread of the virus by people who might not know they are infected. Some cities have gone as far as setting fines for failing to wear a mask. In Laredo, Texas, anyone over the age of five who walks into a store or takes public transit without their mouth and nose covered by a mask or bandana could now be fined up to $1,000. These new measures are designed to “flatten the curve,” or slow the spread of the coronavirus responsible for C

Oil prices decline $3 a barrel as market remains uncertain on supply outlook

Image
Global benchmark oil prices traded as much as $3 a barrel lower as the market opened for Monday's trading session, reflecting fears of oversupply after Saudi Arabia and Russia postponed to Thursday a meeting about a potential pact to cut production. Late last week, prices had surged, with both U.S. and Brent contracts posting their largest weekly percentage gains on record due to hopes that OPEC and its allies would strike a global deal to cut crude supply worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus has cut demand and a month-long price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia has left the market awash in crude. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2V5g0TP via Latest News

Biden raises idea of Democrats holding an online convention

Image
Joe Biden said Sunday that the Democratic National Convention, already delayed until August because of the coronavirus, may need to take place online as the pandemic continues to reshape the race for the White House. The party "may have to do a virtual convention,” the former vice president said. Biden has a commanding lead in the number of delegates needed to secure his party's presidential nomination at a convention in Milwaukee, originally scheduled for mid-July. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2wV0br6 via Latest News

The noble lie about masks and coronavirus should never have been told

Image
Those of you of a certain age will doubtless remember a time when it was universally acknowledged that wearing masks would not protect you or anyone else from the coronavirus pandemic. By "certain age" here I mean all living Americans born on or before April 1, 2020, which according to my notes is when it became possible to express a contrary position in polite society. This was always nonsense. The White House is now suggesting that all of us should wear masks whenever we leave our houses. We are even stealing vast stockpiles of them from the Germans, who have been wearing them in public for around a month on the rather more numerous occasions when their leaders exempt them from house arrest. People who can't get proper masks (apparently the kind people wear when they spray for bugs) are being encouraged to make their own. If nothing else, this has given tedious DIY addicts something else to be self satisfied about. No one cares how quaint and interesting you think the pi

Brazil House Readies Virus Budget as Bolsonaro Response Lags

Image
(Bloomberg) -- Brazil’s Congress is fast tracking its response to the coronavirus pandemic that has so far drawn a slow and often erratic reaction from President Jair Bolsonaro. The lower house Friday night approved a proposal known as the “war budget” that bypasses fiscal responsibility laws to finance anti-virus measures. The constitutional amendment had, which had overwhelming cross-party support in two separate votes. Lawmakers cast their votes remotely rather than attending the session in-person due to coronavirus concerns. The bill still needs to win approval in two rounds of balloting in the Senate before it becomes law.“The bill shows Congress’ sense of responsibility,” lower house Speaker Rodrigo Maia said in an interview ahead of the vote. The proposal, which was drafted by lawmakers and negotiated with Bolsonaro’s economic team, reflects a growing sense of urgency over the outbreak that has killed more people in Brazil than anywhere else in Latin America. Bolsonaro has been cri
