Vietnamese defendant in Kim Jong Nam trial may walk free next month after plea deal

Image
A Vietnamese woman accused of assassinating Kim Jong-un’s half-brother pled guilty to a lesser charge on Monday and may now be freed in early May.  Doan Thi Huong, 29, had been facing the death penalty after being charged with the murder of Kim Jong Nam, 45, who died in February 2017 after the Vietnamese woman and an accomplice allegedly smeared toxic VX agent on his face at Kuala Lumpur airport.  Her high-profile trial in a Malaysian court ended abruptly on Monday after prosecutors offered to reduce the murder charge to a lesser one of “causing hurt by a dangerous weapon.” Ms Doan accepted the plea deal and was sentenced to just over three years in prison, with the jail term backdated to her arrest in 2017.  “It is my view that the length of imprisonment would serve the interest of justice,” said Judge Azmi Ariffin, as he announced the verdict. He told Ms Doan that she was “very very lucky” and he wished her “all the best.” The defendant stood up in the dock and thanked the judge, pro

No Ethiopia plane crash report on Monday, maybe this week: source

Image
"Not today, maybe this week," the source said, when asked about the report into a crash that killed 157 people and led to the worldwide grounding of U.S. planemaker Boeing's top-selling 737 MAX jet. The report will be closely examined for clues to any similarities between the March 10 accident and a Lion Air crash in October, also involving a 737 MAX, that killed 189 people. Liability claims related to the Ethiopian crash and 737 MAX grounding could be the largest aviation reinsurance claim outside of war on record, broker Willis Re said on Monday.. Separately, Norwegian Air said its chief executive Bjoern Kjos would travel to meet Boeing in Seattle on Monday. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2I8G4Jb via Latest News

Rising Turkish political star pulls off Istanbul upset

Image
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's AKP party appeared so sure of winning Istanbul in Sunday's election that posters of its candidate thanking the city were plastered on walls early Monday. Instead, Ekrem Imamoglu, a soft-spoken opposition figure, appears to have pulled off a shock win over AKP powerhouse candidate, former premier Binali Yildirim, to end the ruling party's long reign over Turkey's largest city. Erdogan's AKP suffered a major upset in the Sunday ballot after results showed they had lost not only the capital Ankara and also the country's economic hub Istanbul. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2TQ6ykK via Latest News

James Comey hints at 2020 presidential run in arguably the worst political April Fool’s prank yet

Image
April Fool's Day is possibly the worst time to believe anything you read on the Internet. Take, for example, former FBI Director James Comey a message he sent to his more than one million followers on Twitter. The former FBI director posted a photo to his account showing him standing with his back towards the camera on an open road, looking into the distance with his hands in his pockets and his feet planted over a yellow lane separating each side of the street. “I’m in,” he wrote. “We need someone in the middle.”The former official — who Donald Trump forced out of the FBI in a controversial move that sparked public outcry — then added the hashtag 2020, leading some to believe he was set to make a bold announcement about a political bid for the White House. Mr Comey has no reported intention of actually campaigning to become the next president of the United States, however. And by the sound of his tweet’s response, sitting out of the race is likely a smart decision on his part. Hou

Comedian advances to runoff against incumbent in Ukraine presidential race

Image
Comedian Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who plays Ukraine's president on television, has won the first round of the struggling country's presidential election and is set to face the incumbent in a runoff this month.  The political newcomer had garnered more than 30 per cent of Sunday's vote with four-fifths of the ballots counted on Monday afternoon. President Petro Poroshenko, known as 'the chocolate king' for his expansive candy business, was in second place with 16 per cent.  Former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was expected to miss the runoff with 13 per cent of the vote, even though she has claimed that her own parallel vote count has her advancing to the second round.  On Sunday night, she suggested she would dispute the results and called for supporters to come to polling places to prevent alleged falsifications for Mr Poroshenko  A simmering conflict with Russia-backed separatists in the east continues to plague Ukraine, which last year became the poorest country in

Venezuela: Maduro calls on armed groups to keep order amid electricity rationing

Image
President announces 30-day rationing plan and says pro-government colectivos must ‘defend the peace of every block’ Nicolás Maduro said: ‘We are facing a group of monsters who want to destroy Venezuela.’ Photograph: AFP/Getty Images Venezuela’s authoritarian leader Nicolás Maduro has called on armed pro-government groups to help subdue unrest as he announced a 30-day electricity rationing plan set to inflict further pain on the population. In a televised address, Maduro said he had no choice but to take drastic measures while his government rebuilt key sections of Venezuela’s national grid following a succession of crippling power failures since 7 March. Experts and Maduro’s political opponents say the repeated collapse of Venezuela’s electricity system – which has left millions without light or water – is a consequence of years of neglect, corruption and incompetence. But in his late-night appearance Maduro repeated the Socialist party line that Venezuela had suffered a series of “br

Happy 15th birthday to Gmail, which is about to get a great feature we’ve been waiting for

Image
It's hard to believe that Gmail celebrates its 15th birthday today, debuting as it did on April 1 way back in 2004 -- back when, given the date, many people thought Google was pulling our leg by announcing a free email service on this day of all days. "Google Gets the Message, Launches Gmail," the press release from the time declared. "Search is Number Two Online Activity -- Email is Number One; 'Heck, Yeah,' Say Google Founders".Certainly, the world looks a lot different now than it did then. Gmail's launch, for example, came three years before the iPhone was a thing and a couple of years before the launch of Twitter. Today, Gmail is the premiere free email service, a centerpiece of the workday for countless professionals. To be sure, the search giant is still tweaking things, finding opportunities to make updates that the company hopes will keep improving the user experience such as this news we told you about just a few days ago. Support for Rival Soft Brexit Plan Builds in U.K. Parliament

Image
The proposal, which includes a bolted-on customs union arrangement, is building up steam after the main opposition Labour Party and the Scottish National Party backed it. Prime Minister Theresa May has set herself against staying in the EU’s single market and a customs union, because to do so would wreck two key aims of the pro-Brexit campaign: to end unlimited immigration from the EU and to set the U.K. free of EU tariffs to strike trade deals around the world. The House of Commons is debating four rival options to May’s three-times rejected Brexit deal and politicians will vote on them on Monday evening. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2V6F8bI via Latest News

MAGA hat-wearing attacker slashes man with sword outside San Francisco roller disco

Image
A man was slashed with a sword outside a roller disco by an attacker reportedly wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap.Police have launched a manhunt after the victim was left bleeding heavily on the pavement outside the Church of 8 Wheels in San Francisco on Friday night. The victim was taken to hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. It is understood the victim attempted to grab the other man’s MAGA hat – a symbol of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign – during a dispute before the attacker pulled out a sword and slashed his hand.A photo of the scene shows a red cap with “Make America Great Again” on the front in white lettering lying on the pavement near a pool of blood.David Miles, who manages the roller skating venue, said he ran outside after the attack with a first aid kit and tried to stop the bleeding as the victim was “just gushing blood”, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. It is believed the victim chased after the man before realising the extent o

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's party leads Turkish election viewed as referendum on presidency

Image
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling party is leading in Sunday's municipal elections that he has depicted as a fight for Turkey's survival, and which are seen as a crucial test of the strongman's own support amid a sharp economic downturn. State broadcaster TRT says Mr Erdogan's conservative Islamic-based party has garnered nearly 47.5 per cent of the votes with about 35 per cent of the more than 194,000 ballot boxes counted. According to the early results, the main opposition party has 31 per cent of the vote. The voting was marred by scattered election violence that killed at least two people and injured dozens of others across Turkey. Unofficial final results were expected late Sunday. Economic prosperity provided Mr Erdogan and his party with previous election victories. But the party could lose key posts in the mayoral elections taking place in 30 large cities, 51 provincial capitals and hundreds of districts as Turkey copes with a weakened currency

Oppo Reno "Standard Edition" camera samples (12MP) Note that Shen calls this the "Reno Standard Edition", which may explain why we didn't see a 10x zoom camera on the back of the leaked official images. Galaxy S7 down to quarterly security updates, same as the new Galaxy A70

Image
When it comes to security updates, Samsung's Android-powered devices roughly fall into two categories - ones that get monthly updates and ones that get a security patch once every three months. The Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, now three years old, continue to be supported but they will no longer be getting monthly updates (the S7 active was spared this fate, however). The Galaxy Note FE is technically from 2017, but is really a reborn Note7 from 2016 so it too goes down to the quarterly schedule. It's not entirely based on age, however. Samsung's flagships - S8 and younger - are treated to... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2UmIXwd via IFTTT
