Missouri set to carry out first US execution since pandemic began

Image
The US state of Missouri is set to execute a death row inmate by lethal injection on Tuesday, the first execution in the United States after a two-and-a-half-month hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic. Walter Barton, 64, was convicted in 2006 of the 1991 murder of Gladys Kuehler, an 81-year-old woman who was stabbed to death in Ozark, Missouri. Barton's lawyers filed a last-minute appeal for a stay of execution with the US Supreme Court, but the court denied the application without commenting on the case. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/3gbCHjh via Latest News

Hobby Lobby Sues Christie’s, Wants Us to Feel Sorry for Them

Image
In March, the Wall Street Journal ran an article about how Steve Green, the CEO of Hobby Lobby and President of Museum of the Bible, plans to return 11,500 illicit Iraqi and Egyptian artifacts currently owned by the company or museum to their countries of origin. Among this vast collection of undocumented items that the museum was voluntarily returning is the Gilgamesh Dream Tablet an ancient clay tablet that, among other things, records part of history’s oldest creation story. One detail Green left out of the story? The tablet had been seized on September 24, 2019 by the Department of Homeland Security and Homeland Security Investigations. Now, Hobby Lobby wants the $1.6 million it spent on the tablet back.On May 19, 2020 Hobby Lobby filed a lawsuit against world renowned auction house Christie’s and a dealer identified as “John Doe” alleging that both parties deceived Hobby Lobby about the legality of the sale and seeking the return of funds spent on the item, interest since 2014, an...

Asia Today: India cases surge, Beijing petition offices shut

Image
India recorded its biggest single-day surge in coronavirus cases on Monday, attributed largely to migrant workers returning home after losing their jobs in India's population centers. Authorities are largely blaming the surge in infections to the return of hundreds of thousands of migrant workers to India’s villages, which have weaker health infrastructure. India eased its lockdown rules on May 4 and allowed migrant workers to travel back to their homes, a decision that has resulted in millions of people being on the move for the last two weeks. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/3cHW0hQ via Latest News

The U.S. Navy warned Tuesday it will take “lawful defensive measures” against vessels in the Mideast that come within 100 meters (yards) of its warships, offering specific guidelines after a recent close encounter with Iranian vessels in the Persian Gulf. Defensive measures have typically included turning a ship away from the approaching vessel, sounding its horn, shooting off flares and ultimately firing warning shots to force the vessel away. “Our ships are conducting routine operations in international waters wherever international law allows and do not seek conflict,” said Cmdr. Rebecca Rebarich, a Bahrain-based 5th Fleet spokeswoman. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Xgev6F via Latest News
