Majority of economists say $600 unemployment boost should be extended or increased for rest of the year

Image
Republican lawmakers have cast doubt on extending the $600 per week boost to unemployment insurance during ongoing coronavirus relief bill negotiations, but economists think it should remain at least for the rest of year, a new survey shows. The FiveThirtyEight survey, conducted in partnership with the Initiative on Global Markets at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, polled 33 economists on whether the federal benefits should continue at the same rate, increase, decrease, or lapse completely for the rest of year. A plurality think it should stay the same, and a majority support keeping it as is or increasing, while only 7 percent back getting rid of the benefits altogether.> Another IGM survey of economists -- this one, of quantitative macroeconomic economists -- finds that they generally believe best thing for economy would be to continue or *increase* the $600 federal UI top-up https://t.co/yGuukWD51V pic.twitter.com/Ec1hp8Ex00> > — Catherine Rampell (@cramp

The House GOP's first meeting in months reportedly got heated

Image
It sounds like House Republicans had a lot they needed to get off their chests after months apart. In the House GOP's first in-person meeting in months Tuesday, several congressmen reportedly directed their ire at Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.). Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) all reportedly criticized Cheney, the House's third-ranking Republican, for backing Massie's primary opponent, with Biggs apparently accusing her of undermining the party's ability to win back the House.Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) reportedly joined in, chastising Cheney for breaking with President Trump on several issues; Biggs reportedly also said if Cheney didn't have anything nice to say about the president, she shouldn't say anything at all. And Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) reportedly attacked Cheney for supporting Dr. Anthony Fauci during the coronavirus pandemic.Cheney, for what it's worth, reportedly did not hold back when it

The gunman who shot the husband and son of a federal judge in New Jersey is believed to be an “anti-feminist’ lawyer who was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound hours later.Roy Den Hollander, 72, was discovered by a cleaning crew in the upstate New York town of Rockland, two law enforcement sources told The Daily Beast. He had with him a package addressed to U.S. District Judge Esther Salas—as well as papers that contained the name of another men’s rights lawyer, Marc Angelucci, who was gunned down at his home last week, the sources said.Den Hollander had a case—a challenge to the military’s male-only draft—pending before Salas, according to court documents. And in an essay posted online last year about his battle with melanoma, he made clear his animus toward the trail-blazing jurist, referring to her as “a lazy and incompetent Latina judge.”On his website and in bilious screeds posted in various places online, Den Hollander spewed invective about women and anyone
