Trump’s Shutdown Is Irrational

Shanahan takes Pentagon helm as Trump blasts Mattis

Image
Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan's first full day at the Pentagon's helm was overshadowed Wednesday when President Donald Trump attacked his predecessor Jim Mattis. Shanahan, who took the Pentagon's top spot January 1 after serving as deputy defense secretary, was thrust onto the world stage when Mattis quit last month amid long-running disagreements with President Donald Trump. During televised remarks ahead of his first cabinet meeting of 2019, Trump claimed he had "essentially fired" Mattis, even though the former Pentagon chief had pointedly quit his post over multiple disagreements. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2CN0qEK via Latest News

Kurdish fighters pull out of flashpoint town: Syria's defense ministry

A convoy of Syrian Kurdish fighters has pulled out of the flashpoint area of Manbij in northern Syria, close to territory controlled by Turkey, Syria's defense ministry said on Wednesday. Some 30 km (20 miles) from the Turkish border, the town occupies a critical spot on the map of the Syrian conflict, near the junction of three separate blocks of territory that form spheres of Russian, Turkish and - for now - U.S. influence. "According to information, approximately 400 Kurdish fighters have left Manbij so far," the Syrian defense ministry said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2Rsaifb via Latest News

Honor 8A renders and specs leak with launch imminent

Image
Some new renders come to us today courtesy of Droud Shout. Although we've already seen photos of the device last month when it was going through the TENAA, official renders of the device have surfaced. These renders show the phone will come in at least two colors: blue and black. The 8A won't have a dual-camera like the Honor 7A, but it will feature a dew drop notch unlike the 7A which had a wider notch. The back of the Honor 8A appears to have a glossy finish, so we can expect plastic instead of metal like on the 7A. ABI Research: Apple still dominates wearables but its share drops

Image
According to data from ABI Research, Apple dominated the global smart wearable market in Q2 and Q3 of 2018 with a 43.35% market share. That slice left the likes of Fitbit, Huawei and Samsung with about 8% each. Interestingly, there is nothing in the report on Xiaomi's performance. While Apple is still a clear leader, its market share has decreased. That's despite the increased shipments as the market just expands rapidly. The probe made its much-anticipated flyby of the mysterious Solar System object called Ultima Thule early on January 1st, and NASA declared the mission a success after receiving word that the spacecraft gathered a wealth of science data. Now, as scientists begin studying the very first tidbits of information gathered by New Horizons we're learning a whole lot more about the rock. In fact, we just found out that Ultima Thule isn't one rock, but two. In a gorgeous new image delivered by New Horizons we can see that Ultima Thule is actually two rocks of differing sizes flying in tandem and touching. This is what is known as a "binary," or more specifically a "contact binary." It's an amazing discovery, especially considering that the possibility of Ultima Thule being a binary duo had been floated a number of times over the course of the lengthy New Horizons mission. It

'I won': Trump rebuffs criticism from incoming Senator Romney

Image
Romney, who starts work on Thursday when members of the 2019-2020 Congress take office, suggested in a newspaper essay published on Tuesday that Trump had "caused dismay around the world" and said his presidency had "made a deep descent in December." "On balance, his conduct over the past two years ... is evidence that the president has not risen to the mantle of the office," said Romney in the Washington Post essay, reprising a strong critique of Trump that he voiced during the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump responded with a tweet on Wednesday, noting Romney's failed 2012 White House bid and also taking a shot at former Republican Senator Jeff Flake, who has just retired from Congress and who has been one of the few Republican lawmakers to be openly critical of the president. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2BUJ8nq via Latest News

Australian man screaming at spider 'why don't you die?' triggers full police response

Image
Police in Australia responded to reports of a man screaming "why don't you die?" by dispatching multiple units to a home in Perth. But officers were soon told to stand down when they found a man who “had only been trying to kill a spider", according to the police log published online. The alarm was raised when a passer-by heard a screaming child and a man repeatedly shouting.  In a tweet on Wednesday morning Wanneroo police shared their account of the unusual incident.  It cited the man’s “serious fear” of spiders, and added that there had been no injuries at the scene apart from those sustained by the spider.  The now-deleted tweet by Wanneroo police The tweet read: “Multiple police units responded lights and sirens to the incident this morning. Never a dull moment for the Police!” A police spokesman, Samuel Dinnison, said: "It's just one of those jobs where you go expecting to see one thing and see another." He confirmed the tweet was later deleted fr

Scientists think they know where the early universe’s dark matter has been hiding

Most of the mass in the universe is made up of a kind of matter that none of us have ever seen. It's called "dark matter" and, despite being incredibly abundant, it's also extremely difficult to study. Decades-old calculations suggested that there is more dark matter around younger galaxies than the ancient ones from the early days of the universe, but then where did the dark matter we see today come from? A new study offers the answer. Past research suggested that galaxies we see nearby have more dark matter than those that are very distant. The farther away a galaxy is the farther back in time we're effectively looking, and scientists believed that those ancient galaxies didn't have all that much dark matter around them. As it turns out, that isn't the case. After studying some 1,500 galaxies, researchers led by Alfred Tiley of Durham University have determined that the amount of dark matter surrounding these huge collections of stars and planets is abou

Trump, Pelosi era could see fireworks in Washington

Image
For the next two years, Donald Trump and Nancy Pelosi will have to work together. Trump, the Republican president, will need to deal with Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives, if he wants to improve on what has been a thin list so far of legislative accomplishments. Pelosi, second in line for the presidency, will need to show that Democrats are ready to govern and have more to offer than just opposition to Trump ahead of the 2020 presidential election. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2sc1741 via Latest News

Trump warns US government shutdown could last a 'long time'

Image
US President Donald Trump met top Democratic lawmakers on Wednesday, but they failed to hammer out an agreement that would end a partial government shutdown over his demand for billions of dollars to build a border wall with Mexico. One day before Democrats take over the House of Representatives, Trump showed no signs of backing away from his insistence that Congress cough up $5.6 billion for his "beautiful" southern wall. Trump met behind closed doors at the White House with Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat who will take over as speaker of the House on Thursday, and Chuck Schumer, the Senate minority leader, but there were no indications any progress had been made in resolving the impasse. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2AqZeoX via Latest News

Decade-old flaw in Twitter allows hackers to spread ISIS propaganda using old accounts, report claims

Image
Terrorists are allegedly exploiting a decade-old vulnerability in Twitter's systems to hijack dormant accounts and spread propaganda online. According to TechCrunch, there has been a resurgence in the number of accounts being hacked in recent weeks, many of which had been inactive for years. The hackers are reportedly using the fact that, prior to this summer, those opening an account with Twitter did not need to confirm their email addresses, meaning there are a number of accounts on the platform not linked to real email addresses or expired addresses. This allows hackers to then create the email address, and so gain access to the attached account. Security experts said this issue was "all too well known", but that it was hard for Twitter to manage the problem. "Twitter could expire accounts after a certain period of dormancy, but legacy accounts that were created without real associated emails will be vulnerable to this sort of hijack," said Robert Pritchard,
