Seattle will move to dismantle 'Chaz' occupied protest zone, mayor says

Image
Jenny Durkan says police will return to precinct where hundreds have gathered dailySeattle officials announced on Monday that they would begin to dismantle the six blocks of occupied streets known as the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, or “Chaz”, following two shootings at the site in 48 hours.“It’s time for people to go home. It is time for us to restore Cal Anderson and Capitol Hill so it can be a vibrant part of the community,” said the Seattle mayor, Jenny Durkan, during a press conference. “We can still accommodate people who want to protest peacefully, come there and gather. But the impacts on the businesses and residents and community are now too much.”Durkan said Seattle police would be returning to the east precinct, the site they abandoned after a series of dangerous clashes between protesters and law enforcement. She said they’ll do so “peacefully” and “in the near future” but did not offer an exact timeline.Early on Tuesday morning, police reported another shooting, this one n

Brazil judge orders Bolsonaro to wear a mask due to COVID-19

Image
A Brazilian judge ordered President Jair Bolsonaro to wear a mask in public after the right-wing populist attended political rallies without one in the middle of the world's second-worst coronavirus outbreak. Federal Judge Renato Borelli ruled in a decision made public on Tuesday that Bolsonaro was subject to a fine of 2,000 reais ($387) a day if he continued to disobey a local ordinance in the federal district meant to slow the pandemic. Brazil's solicitor general, which argues the government's legal interests, said in a statement that it was studying ways to reverse the decision. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/31a24wt via Latest News

India tells Pakistan to cut embassy staff by half, says will do same

Image
India told Pakistan on Tuesday to slash its embassy staff in New Delhi by half -- saying it would do the same in Islamabad -- as a diplomatic spat continued between the nuclear-armed rivals. The fractious relationship between the neighbours has worsened since New Delhi expelled two Pakistan embassy officials over spying claims in late May. After that, New Delhi accused Islamabad of torturing two Indian diplomats arrested following an alleged hit-and-run in the Pakistani capital. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/31ae7tK via Latest News

The Reason Why Team Obama Is Gunning for This Powerful Democrat

Image
Rep. Eliot Engel and President Barack Obama didn’t always see eye-to-eye on issues of foreign policy. The New York congressman, as staunch a Middle East hawk as there currently is in the Democratic Party, was the most high-profile House Democrat to oppose Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, the biggest foreign policy initiative of his presidency. Now, Engel, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, is fighting for his political life amid a primary challenge to his left from Jamaal Bowman, a former high school principal. Obama administration alumni want him to know they haven’t forgotten his vote—and that they don’t especially like what he’s gotten done since. As some key figures in the party establishment, from Hillary Clinton to Speaker Nancy Pelosi to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, have lined up to support Engel, high-profile former Obama advisers, some of whom have immense sway with liberals nationwide through the popular podcasts from Crooked Media, have joined forces with Sen

Minneapolis police chief says Floyd's death was 'murder'

Image
Minneapolis' police chief says the death of George Floyd was “murder” and that the officer who pressed his knee into Floyd's neck knew what he was doing because he had taken specific training on the dangers of positional asphyxiation. It appears to be the first time Chief Medaria Arradondo has used the word “murder” to describe the death. Floyd, a Black handcuffed man, died May 25 after Derek Chauvin, a white officer, pressed his knee into his neck for nearly 8 minutes and held it there even after Floyd said he couldn’t breathe and stopped moving. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2BsWQ4h via Latest News

Funding cuts threaten ancient sites, warn Mexican archaeologists

Image
Sharp reduction in heritage body’s budget is part of wider savings due to Covid-19 costsThe Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador has often boasted of the strength and longevity of Mexican culture and learning, once saying that “when buffalo were still grazing in what is now New York, there were already universities and printing presses in Mexico”.But archaeologists fear that a recent wave of swingeing budget cuts will decimate research into the country’s pre-Columbian past, and leave thousands of ancient sites – including Aztec temples and Mayan cities – at the mercy of looters.More than 6,000 scholars recently signed a letter begging the president, commonly referred to as Amlo, to reconsider a 75% cut to the operating budget of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).“These draconian cuts will have an inevitable impact on our heritage, and on the training of new anthropologists, historians and conservationists,” said Leonardo López Luján, one of Mexico’s lea

Seattle police investigate new shooting near autonomous zone

Image
Police tweeted the shooting took place on the edge of the Capitol Hill Organized Protest (CHOP), or Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone, where demonstrators set up a police-free zone in the wake of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis police custody. A man was taken to Harborview Medical Center at 5 a.m. after being shot near Cal Anderson Park and was in satisfactory condition, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said. There have been no reports indicating that the shooting on the edge of Cal Anderson Park was related to the occupation zone. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2YqeTRK via Latest News

Bolton Says Jared Kushner Was the Most Important Person in the White House

Image
Former National Security Adviser John Bolton said in an interview with ABC News that aired Sunday night that the most important person in the White House was President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner.“It varied from time to time,” Bolton said. “The sustained answer to that question… is Jared Kushner.”Bolton went on to say that Trump was generally uninformed and did not do his homework.“There was an unwillingness… to do systematic learning so he could make the most informed decisions,” Bolton said, adding that the president’s day didn’t “start until almost lunchtime.”“I don’t think he is fit for office,” Bolton said. What the Hell Is John Bolton?Bolton’s interview with ABC comes just two days before the release of his book, titled The Room Where It Happened. The Department of Justice last week attempted to put an injunction on the book and block its release. But a judge in Washington struck down that effort Saturday. Most of Bolton’s comments about the president seemed to focus o

Apple sends mysterious update to the AirPods Pro

Image
Yesterday during its online WWDC event, Apple announced a couple of new features headed to its AirPods Pro: seamless switching between audio sources (as long as they're all Apple devices), and "Spatial Audio" surround sound. Today, coincidentally or not, the company has started sending out a firmware update to the AirPods Pro, which will take them from version 2D15 to version 2D27. Unfortunately Apple doesn't publish changelogs for its AirPods updates, so we don't yet know if this is the one that enables all those new features or not. It's also not very easy to get, as with all... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/3fXBISR via IFTTT
