US citizen detained during violent Vietnam protests

Image
The US has urged the Vietnamese authorities to release one of its citizens who was among dozens of people arrested during violent protests last week.  Will Nguyen, 32, a Yale graduate who comes from Houston, Texas, was visiting Ho Chi Minh City, en route from the US to Singapore, where he was due to graduate from a master’s programme in July.  According to a statement released on Thursday on behalf of Mr Nguyen’s family and friends, he was “beaten over the head and dragged into a police truck” after joining a rare demonstration on June 9 against proposed special economic zones that have raised fears of Chinese encroachment.  A video linked to the statement allegedly shows Mr Nguyen being dragged along the street with blood streaming from his face. He is later shown standing on the back of a police pickup truck.  This is #democracy in #Vietnampic.twitter.com/j2hb76QZwO— Will Nguyen (阮英惟) (@will_nguyen_) June 10, 2018 Vietnam’s Communist government bans anti-government...

Latest BlackBerry Keyone update prepares it for Oreo

Image
BlackBerry has started pushing out a new update to its Keyone smartphone. The update - rolling out in multiple regions, including Canada and the United States - weighs in at 17MB and arrives as version ABA676. As for changes included, nothing much is known, except for the fact that it's a maintenance update that prepares the device for the Oreo update. It's worth mentioning that those who installed the update are reporting it first throws an error, but the installation process completes successfully after the device reboots. So do keep this in mind while installing the update. As... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2t7bPZQ via IFTTT

Our Smartphone World Cup is starting this week, here are the groups

Image
It's World Cup season and we though you'd like to join the fun with a smartphone-themed competition - welcome to our Smartphone World Cup. The group stage kicks off tomorrow, but before that we'd like to introduce the participants and detail how they qualified and the rules of the tournament. We decided that if a phone is going to win, it has to be the best phone that its brand offers. What's "best"? Either it's the most "skilled" phone, the one loaded to the brim with features, or the most popular one, the one that has proven to be a success in the market. Check out our Nokia 8 Sirocco video review

Image
HMD's had a plan in place when it resurrected the Nokia brand - start from the middle and expand up and down. The Nokia 8 was its first flagship, but its 5.3" screen felt a little small and the dual camera wasn't great. But HMD had a do-over. The Nokia 8 Sirocco increases the screen size to 5.5", but keeps the old fashioned 16:9 aspect ratio. It has improved water resistance (IP67) and gains wireless charging. More importantly it improves the dual camera. Yet HMD's attempt to fix the issues of the Nokia 8 weren't quite successful. Some are its own doing - like dropping the 3.5 mm... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2yhGsl8 via IFTTT

Instagram decides not to roll out screenshot notification feature

Image
Earlier this year in February, Instagram started testing a feature that would inform the users if someone took a screenshot of their Story posts. The feature was in beta testing and only select users were part of it. The feature was met with backlash as users had grown used to taking screenshots of Story posts for whatever it is they intended to do with them. It's one of the things that made people prefer Instagram Story mode over Snapchat Stories as the latter has always had screenshot-warning built-into it. It seems Instagram has decided to hear its users on this one. According to... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2JIvWso via IFTTT

Sony is working on a new Xperia Home launcher

Image
A few days ago, news broke about Sony discontinuing the development of its own Xperia Home launcher that ships with every Sony smartphone. The firm has also planned to close the Beta program for the launcher. The information seemed odd at the time, but now Erika Prymus, a developer part of the Xperia Home team, has cleared the confusion. She explained that Sony is now focusing on a new Xperia Home app. The reason? We still don't know but it probably has something to do with the new gesture controls introduced with Android P, so Sony probably decided to start from... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/2JXmUqT via IFTTT

The Chinese smartphone maker delivered the final Android 8.0 Oreo update to the public, despite the technical difficulties along the way. Now it's time for the Android 8.1 update, but Xiaomi still hasn't announced a specific timeline for the OTA release. June patch downgrading Android P-powered Nokia 7 Plus units to Oreo

Image
If you are a Nokia 7 Plus user running Android P beta on your unit, you are strongly advised against installing the latest June security update (if you haven't already). Reason being, those who did are reporting serious issues post update. Specifically, users say the 1.3GB update is basically a downgrade package, and so it results in applications force closing and even device crashing in some cases. Harvard rated Asian American applicants lower on personality scores than other students, study finds

Image
Harvard admissions officers consistently rated Asian American students lower on “personal qualities” than students of other races, according to admissions data analysed as part of a racial discrimination lawsuit against the prestigious university. A study of 20 years’ worth of admissions data shows Asian American applicants to Harvard scored much better than all other racial groups on measures of academic merit, but worse on subjective analyses of their personal qualities completed by Harvard admissions staff. In fact, the study found Asian Americans had the lowest admission rate of any racial group between 2000 and 2019, despite having higher test scores than every other racial group over the two-decade period. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2JRw4VX via Latest News
