REFILE-UPDATE 1-UK's May says greater risk of no Brexit the longer it takes to find compromise

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday that the longer it takes to find a compromise with the opposition Labour Party to secure a parliamentary majority for a Brexit deal, the less likely it is that Britain will leave the European Union. May has so far failed to secure backing for her negotiated agreement with Brussels as some Conservative lawmakers and Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, which props up her minority government, have voted it down. "The fact is that on Brexit there are areas where the two main parties agree: we both want to end free movement, we both want to leave with a good deal, and we both want to protect jobs," May said in comments released by her Downing Street office. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2FXVzRq via Latest News

Libya fighting could trigger new refugee crisis, says EU, amid fears of civil war

Image
Forces loyal to Libya’s beleaguered UN-backed government carried out airstrikes on Saturday to try to stop rebel troops advancing on Tripoli, raising fears the country may be heading back to full-blown civil war.  As the army of Khalifa Haftar, a military strongman in control of eastern Libya, claimed to have seized control of Tripoli's airport, EU officials warned that instability could trigger a fresh flow of migrants and refugees heading towards Europe.  A meeting of G7 foreign ministers called on Gen Haftar to halt his offensive and even his traditional supporters Russia and Egypt expressed concern that his sudden advance would plunge Libya into chaos.  The 75-year-old general’s advance on Tripoli appears to be a power play designed to strengthen his negotiating position ahead of a UN-brokered conference on Libya’s future scheduled for later this month.  Since the fall of Gaddafi in 2011, the country has been fractured and its government divided. US calls for halt to Libya offensive as clashes rage

Image
The US on Sunday appealed for an "immediate halt" to a military offensive by Libyan strongman Khalifa Haftar, as fighting raged near Tripoli despite a UN call for a ceasefire. Haftar's forces and the UN-backed unity government exchanged air strikes Sunday, three days after Haftar launched an offensive to seize the capital. The unity government said the fighting had killed 21 people, while the United Nations said there had been "no truce" despite calls for a two-hour pause in fighting for civilians and the wounded to flee. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2UBfNK5 via Latest News

May Makes Fresh Appeal as Lawmaker Warns of Brexit Purgatory

Image
A long but flexible extension to the Brexit process proposed by the European Union was denounced as “like purgatory” by a leading U.K. lawmaker, as Prime Minister Theresa May appealed to both the public and politicians in search of support for a compromise departure plan. The government needs to move forward with leaving the trading bloc as soon as possible, the Conservative Chief Secretary to the Treasury Liz Truss told BBC radio on Sunday. While May will meet EU leaders Wednesday to make her case for a short extension to June 30, European Council President Donald Tusk is pushing for a delay of as long as a year to allow time to forge a new consensus, with an option to leave earlier once the withdrawal agreement is ratified by parliament. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://yhoo.it/2Uj46s5 via Latest News

SNL Gives Joe Biden Sensitivity Training: ‘Let’s Hug It Out, America!’

Image
Saturday Night Live gave Donald Trump a break this week and instead put Joe Biden through the ringer. Jason Sudeikis busted back onto the show in a cold open sketch that found the former vice president undergoing sensitivity training following a week in which he was repeatedly accused of inappropriate behavior with women over the years and awkwardly tried to dismiss those allegations with a series of jokes. “You guys know that I’m a tactile politician, right?” Sudeikis’ Biden asked his campaign staffers. “I’m a hugger, I’m a kisser, and I’m a little bit of a sniffer. The last thing I ever want to do is offend anyone.” With that in mind, they brought in a consultant played by Kate McKinnon to school him on how to behave, and Biden immediately started nuzzling her head and rubbing her arms. “Yeah, so this is exactly the kind of thing I’m here to prevent.” “Wait, I think nose to nose is going to be OK,” Biden replied. “Because look, I did the 23andme thing, like Lizzie, what’s her name, W

Fighting flares in battle for Tripoli despite UN appeal for ceasefire in Libya

Image
Fighting has flared in southern Tripoli as General Khalifa Haftar’s self-styled Libyan National  Army (LNA) intensified its assault on the capital despite a United Nations appeal for a cease fire.  The United Nations mission to Libya (Unsmil) called for an "urgent" two hour truce to allow the evacuation of civilians and wounded from Tripoli's southern suburbs on Sunday, where troops loyal to the internationally recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) were battling to halt the LNA assault on the city.  But the violence saw no sign of abating, with Gen Haftar's forces launching at least one airstrike on a Tripoli suburb, and witnesses reported hearing grad rockets firing to the south of the city.  The airstrike was the LNA's first use of air power in the battle. It came after pro-government forces launched air-raids on Saturday.  Militiamen from the western city of Misrata head into Tripoli to reinforce the UN-backed government  Credit: STRINGER/EPA-EFE/REX C

Timmothy Pitzen: Ex-convict charged with pretending to be long-missing boy

A former convict accused of pulling a cruel hoax by pretending pretended to be a missing boy from Illinois has been charged with making false statements.Brian Rini, 23, had claimed he was 14-year-old Timmothy Pitzen, who went missing in 2011 after his mother killed herself when he was six-years-old. He said he had escaped from an eight-year ordeal at the hands of sex traffickers. But Mr Rini’s claims were debunked earlier this week after DNA tests confirmed he was not the long-lost boy.The FBI said Mr Rini had made false claims twice before, also portraying himself as a juvenile sex-trafficking victim.“Law enforcement confronted him with the DNA results, and at that point the person immediately stated that he was not Timmothy Pitzen, and of course law enforcement knew by virtue of the DNA analysis that he was in fact Brian Rini,” said US attorney Benjamin Glassman. The charge should send a message about the damage such false claims can do, he said, adding: ”It’s not okay to do it because

Kirstjen Nielsen quits as US Homeland Security Secretary

Ms Nielsen's departure was confirmed by the President on Twitter and came after she met Mr Trump at the White House. Only last week, speaking in Las Vegas, the US president declared that "our country is full" as he placed immigration firmly on the agenda of his re-election campaign. According to reports in Washington, the final straw came when Ms Nielsen was blindsided by the White House decision to rescind the nomination of Ronald Vitello as head of Immigration and Customs, one of the most senior officials in her department. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will be leaving her position, and I would like to thank her for her servi
