Mount Holyoke Art Professor Tried to Gouge Out Eyes of Woman She Loved: Cops

Image
Rie Hachiyanagi, a 48-year-old art professor and performance artist, was arraigned on Friday for an alleged attack on Christmas Eve morning on a female professor in her 60s she had fallen in love with but who apparently did not share the sentiment. The Mount Holyoke College prof, who has worked at the prestigious college since 2004, is accused of using a decorative rock, a fire poker and garden shears to try to kill an unnamed faculty member who used trickery to stop the attack, by telling Hachiyanagi she returned her amorous feelings, according to court documents. The victim suffered “multiple broken bones in the nose and eye area and numerous lacerations and puncture wounds on the head and face,” according to a police report by State Trooper Geraldine L. Bresnahan presented at the court hearing. Investigators say Hachiyanagi called 911 after midnight Dec. 24 to report that the other professor was “lying in a pool of blood and barely breathing” inside the victim’s home in Leverett, Mas

Australia to pay 'whatever it takes' to fight wildfires

Image
Australia's government said Monday it was willing to pay “whatever it takes” to help communities recover from deadly wildfires that have ravaged the country. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the government was committing an extra 2 billion Australian dollars ($1.4 billion) toward the recovery effort in addition to the tens of millions of dollars that have already been promised. Morrison’s announcement of the funds, which will go toward rebuilding towns and infrastructure destroyed by the fires, came as the death toll from the disaster rose with the discovery of a body in a remote part of New South Wales. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/35pEf2u via Latest News

As Tensions With Iran Escalated, Trump Opted for an Extreme Measure

Image
WASHINGTON -- In the chaotic days leading to the death of Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, Iran's most powerful commander, top American military officials put the option of killing him -- which they viewed as the most extreme response to recent Iranian-led violence in Iraq -- on the menu they presented to President Donald Trump. They didn't think he would take it. In the wars waged since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Pentagon officials have often offered improbable options to presidents to make other possibilities appear more palatable. After initially rejecting the Soleimani option on Dec. 28 and authorizing airstrikes on an Iranian-backed Shiite militia group instead, a few days later Trump watched, fuming, as television reports showed Iranian-backed attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, according to Defense Department and administration officials.By late Thursday, the president had gone for the extreme option. Top Pentagon officials were stunned.Trump made the decision, senior off

Uganda police disperse Bobi Wine supporters with tear gas

Image
Police in Uganda on Monday fired tear gas to disperse supporters of pop star and presidential hopeful Bobi Wine when he tried to hold a rally, underscoring the hurdles he faces in seeking to unseat President Yoweri Museveni. Police also arrested Wine, a lawmaker whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, accusing him of trying to stage an illegal assembly. Wine and his pressure group People Power had aimed to start a program of consultations with supporters on his plans to stand for president next year in a challenge to Museveni, 75, who has ruled Uganda since 1986. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/35te6iY via Latest News

Australia’s Wildfire Crisis: Key Numbers Behind the Disaster

Image
(Bloomberg) -- Australia is in the grip of deadly wildfires burning across the country, triggering an emotive debate about the impact of climate change in the world’s driest-inhabited continent. The unprecedented scale of the crisis, and images of terrified tourists sheltering on beaches from the infernos, has shocked many Australians. With summer only just beginning and the nation affected by a prolonged drought, authorities fear the death toll will continue to mount as more homes and land are destroyed. Here are some key details of the crisis:How many people have died?Since the fire season began months ago during the southern hemisphere winter, at least 24 people have died. Among the fatalities are volunteer firefighters, including a young man who died when his 10-ton truck was flipped over in what officials have described as a “fire tornado.” Australia’s worst wildfires came in 2009 when the Black Saturday blazes left 180 people dead. How big an area has burned?Massive tracts of land

US official dismisses 'desperate' move to oust Venezuela's Guaido

Image
A senior US official on Sunday dismissed as "desperate" a move by Venezuelan police to prevent opposition leader Juan Guaido from entering the National Assembly, where he had hoped to be voted in for a second term as speaker. Guaido's position as speaker was the justification he used in proclaiming himself the country's acting president nearly a year ago, alleging that President Nicolas Maduro's 2018 re-election was fraudulent. "The desperate actions of the former Maduro regime, illegally forcibly preventing Juan Guaido... from entering the building, make this morning's 'vote,' which lacks quorum and does not meet minimum constitutional standards, a farce," said Michael Kozak, acting assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere Affairs. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2uhvASE via Latest News

Several Iraqi lawmakers hold out in vote seeking to expel U.S military

Image
The United States military is officially in Iraq at the country's invitation. If that invitation is withdrawn American forces would seemingly withdraw along with it. Such a scenario inched a little closer to reality Sunday when members of Iraq's parliament voted to compel the government — which would then make the final decision — to expel the United States from the country Sunday following Washington's airstrike that killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani in Iraq this week. The non-binding vote, which was pushed heavily by factions that have grown out of Shiite militia organizations aligned with Iran, wasn't quite as resounding as its 170-0 tally seemed though. The parliament has 328 members in total, many of whom, primarily Sunni and Kurdish lawmakers, reportedly did not attend the session or vote because they oppose abolishing the agreement between Iraq and the U.S.The vote won't become final until Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi — the subject of mass ant

IKEA to pay $46M in boy's dresser tipover death, lawyers say

Image
IKEA has agreed to pay $46 million to the parents of a 2-year-old boy who died of injuries suffered when a 70-pound (32-kilogram) recalled dresser tipped over onto him, the family’s lawyers said Monday. Jozef Dudek, of Buena Park, California, died in 2017 of his injuries, and his parents sued the Swedish home furnishings company in a Philadelphia court in 2018. In the lawsuit, the Dudeks accused IKEA of knowing that its Malm dressers posed a tip-over hazard and that they had injured or killed a number of children, but that the company had failed to warn consumers that the dressers shouldn't be used without being anchored to a wall. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2sJbm43 via Latest News
