Monster 15ft crocodile finally caught after eight-year hunt in Australia

Image
An elusive monster saltwater crocodile weighing 1,328 pounds has finally been caught after an eight-year hunt in Australia, officials said on Tuesday. The 15-foot beast was found in a trap downstream from the northern outback town of Katherine after first being spotted in 2010. Authorities had tried in vain for years to bag the croc, which is estimated to be 60 years old. "We've called it a lot of things over the years because it's been so hard to catch," senior wildlife officer John Burke told broadcaster ABC. "It is a bit of a thrill, but you've also got to admire the size of the animal and how old it is. You've got to have a bit of respect for it." The animal was taken to a crocodile farm to keep it separate from the local human population,  Credit: NT Department of Tourism and Culture The animal was taken to a crocodile farm to keep it separate from the local human population, said Northern Territory wildlife operations chief Tracey Duldig. ...

Officials admit they may have separated family – who might be US citizens – for up to a year

Image
The complications the government has run into foretell a troubled road ahead. The Department of Justice (DoJ) told a federal judge Tuesday that it may have mistakenly separated a father and toddler who could both be US citizens for as long as a year, in the process of enforcing the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) called the revelation “horrific” and blamed the administration’s poor execution of the practice of family separations. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2L41tVq via Latest News

Did ancient Romans whale the Mediterranean?

Image
Ancient Roman hunters may have precipitated the disappearance of grey and right whales from the Mediterranean, a study said Wednesday, suggesting commercial whaling is much older than we thought. The finding suggests right and grey whales were "common" in the North Atlantic 2,000 years ago, likely navigating the strait to calve in the temperate Mediterranean Sea. "The evidence that these two... species were present along the shores of the Roman Empire raises the hypothesis that they may have formed the basis of a forgotten whaling industry," researchers wrote in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2LcCbBo via Latest News

Kim Jong-un opts for potato farm visit over Mike Pompeo meeting

Image
Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, appears to have opted to visit a potato farm instead of meeting Mike Pompeo when the US Secretary of State was in Pyongyang over the weekend for the latest round of discussions on the future of the Korean Peninsula.  Mr Pompeo arrived in the North Korean capital on July 6 - but his three-day visit was ignored by the North Korean dictator.  Mr Pompeo’s aides were largely kept in the dark about the schedule for the visit, including where they would be staying, and repeated requests about when the secretary of state would be able to meet Mr Kim went unanswered.  Instead, he held talks with Kim Yong-chol, a general and member of the central committee of the Workers’ Party who is widely seen as Mr Kim’s right-hand man. Mr Pompeo’s remarks during the discussions did not please the North Korean side, however, with the Foreign Ministry quoted as describing Washington’s demands for complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of...
