Waymo well ahead of rivals for autonomous driving performance
Although headlines like to tout how far down the road lots of companies are when it comes to making driverless vehicles a day-to-day reality on our roads and an increasing number of features from driverless research are now appearing on vehicles in our showrooms, truly autonomous vehicles don't seem to be getting much closer to everyday reality. The state of California requires any company engaged in developing autonomous vehicle technology and testing their self-driving vehicles on public roads to provide a report each year on the amount of miles traveled in autonomous mode, as well as the number of what are called "disengagements." Disengagements are when the self-driving system is deactivated and control of the vehicle is therefore passed back to humans, which can be due to circumstances such as a system failure, traffic, weather or road conditions that required the intervention of a human driver.
