Donald Trump takes aim at FBI deputy director Andrew McCabePresident Donald Trump has hit out at the FBI's deputy director Andrew McCabe after reports emerged that he was planning to retire shortly. Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised the US intelligence agency, accusing its senior staff of political bias.  Mr McCabe is thought to have told senior FBI officials he was planning to leave the agency in the near future as he is eligible to retire in March.  In a tweet on Saturday evening, Mr Trump accused Mr McCabe of not being impartial during the agency's investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails. He wrote: "How can FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, the man in charge, along with leakin' James Comey, of the Phony Hillary Clinton investigation (including her 33,000 illegally deleted emails) be given $700,000 for wife's campaign by Clinton Puppets during investigation?"  Mr Trump was referring to donations from the state Democratic party to Mr McCabe's wife Jill, who ran for the Virginia state senate. Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe's political action committee reportedly made six contributions totalling $467,500 to Mrs McCabe's campaign. The state Democratic party also gave  $207,788 in 2015.  FAQ | Hillary Clinton’s emails However, all the donations were made before Mr McCabe took over as deputy director of the FBI and before he could have had any oversight into the email investigation. In another tweet, Mr Trump said Mr McCabe "is racing the clock to retire with full benefits. 90 days to go?!!!" Critics have accused them of attempting to draw attention away from the Russia investigation. Two people from Mr Trump's campaign have pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI and a third has been charged with a conspiracy and money laundering. Earlier this month the FBI's director Christopher Wray defended the agency, telling Congress: "There is no shortage of opinions out there, but what I can tell you is that the FBI that I see is tens of thousands of agents and analysts and staff working their tails off to keep Americans safe".
