Joe Biden was drowned out during much of the Democratic debate

Image
Former Vice President Joe Biden was supposed to be a 2020 frontrunner. He didn't talk like it.Biden, the largely undisputed poll leader in the Democratic primary field, spent just 15 minutes and 28 seconds speaking during Thursday's debate. That's nearly four minuted behind South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg's 19 minutes, 12 seconds, and puts Biden ahead of only entrepreneurs Andrew Yang and Tom Steyer in terms of talking time, CNN reports.Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) is meanwhile on the lower end of the polling spectrum. But that didn't stop her from speaking the second most of the seven candidates onstage. She gt in 19 minutes, 54 seconds of words, while Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) topped the list with 20 minutes, 18 seconds. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) meanwhile came in third just behind them with 19 minutes, 23 seconds.Find a chart comparing speaking times at CNN.More stories from theweek.com Rise of Skywalker dominates box office despite devastating

China says case of detained Canadians turned over to prosecutors

Image
China's foreign ministry said on Friday that an investigation into two Canadians detained on state security charges since December last year had ended, and the case had been turned over to prosecutors. Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig were detained in China shortly after Canadian authorities arrested Huawei Technologies Co's [HWT.UL] Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver on a U.S. warrant. Canada says their arrests were "arbitrary", and has been in a diplomatic dispute with China since then. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/34KuSK6 via Latest News

Medicare-for-All Opponents Aren’t Murderers

Image
(Bloomberg Opinion) -- Health care is a major point of contention in the Democratic primary campaign. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren favor a single-payer system, while Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg support a federal insurance program to compete with private insurers, also known as the public option. Some fans of single-payer have begun to deploy a dire-sounding argument: failing to implement Medicare for All, they claim, would be tantamount to murder. For example, Libby Watson, a staff writer at the New Republic, tweeted:Roosevelt Institute researcher Mike Konczal went so far as to calculate the “expected murders” that would result from pushing for a public option rather than Medicare for All.QuicktakeMedicare for AllIt’s not clear to what extent these arguments are tongue-in-cheek. News outlets are fond of running articles declaring that the U.S. health-care system is “literally killing people”; the actual content of these articles is almost always only about the well-documented s

U.S. third-quarter growth unrevised at 2.1%

Image
U.S. economic growth nudged up in the third quarter, the government confirmed on Friday, and there are signs the economy more or less maintained the moderate pace of expansion as the year ended, supported by a strong labor market. Despite the unrevised reading, which was in line with economists' expectations, consumer spending was stronger than previously reported. There were also upgrades to business spending on nonresidential structures such as power infrastructure, which limited the drop in overall business investment. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2SamqkL via Latest News

Impeaching Donald Trump is not enough. The case for conviction

Image
The US Senate must show America, and the world, that there are consequences for presidents who abuse their powerDonald Trump has been impeached. For the sake of American democracy and national security, the Senate must convict and remove him from office. The articles of impeachment make a powerful and clear case: The president abused his power, extorting Ukraine to help Trump’s campaign by fabricating smears about his potential political opponent and withholding US assistance from Ukraine until the campaign help was received. Then, when the House of Representatives began investigating the president’s actions, the president engaged in obstruction of Congress by ordering the executive branch not to comply with congressional subpoenas. The facts – as made clear by the record of the call between Trump and Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy, witness testimony, and the evidence compiled by the House intelligence and judiciary committees – indisputably back up the accusations made in the a

Spain rocked by rulings that renew questions over Catalonia

Image
Spain was thrown into turmoil on Thursday by court rulings that could undermine Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s hopes of forming a new government and force fresh elections in the region of Catalonia. In a potentially stinging reversal for Spanish justice authorities, the European Union’s top court ruled that a former Catalán official serving a prison sentence for his role in a banned independence referendum two years ago had the right to parliamentary immunity when he was on trial. A court in Spain, meanwhile, found that Catalonia’s current president, Quim Torra, is unfit to hold office for 18 months for disobeying the country’s electoral board, a decision likely to lead to more elections in a region riven by protests. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2MdCezv via Latest News

Democrats Aim Strong Words Against China Over Hong Kong, Uighurs

Image
(Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential candidates took aim at China on Thursday, with Joe Biden saying that ethnic Uighur Muslims are being kept in “concentration camps” and calling for sanctions against the world’s second-largest economy.During the party’s debate in Los Angeles, several of the seven 2020 contenders on stage challenged Beijing over its treatment of Muslim minority populations in its western Xinjiang region and its handling of protests in Hong Kong.“We have to make it clear: This is as far as you go China,” said Biden, who served as vice president under Barack Obama.China is looming large as a topic in the 2020 campaign. President Donald Trump just reached an interim deal with Beijing that would avoid a further escalation for now of the countries’ almost two-year trade war. Yet analysts are skeptical that much more progress can be made entering the U.S. election year, and the Democratic contenders on Thursday highlighted human-rights questions that have inflamed tension

Muslim leadership council criticizes Muslim summit in Malaysia

Image
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Wednesday mounted a veiled attack on a Muslim summit in Malaysia shunned by Saudi Arabia, saying such gatherings would weaken Islam. Leaders of Muslim nations, including Saudi rivals Iran, Turkey and Qatar, will attend the summit this week in Kuala Lumpur, which analysts say is aimed at rivaling the OIC, a 57-member pan-Islamic body headquartered in the Saudi city of Jeddah. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2EBQP3B via Latest News

Deal: get a free Pixel 4 and Nest Hub if you're on AT&T and upgrade

Image
In the mobile world there are good deals and then there are amazing deals. This is one of the latter. After all, you can't go lower, price-wise, than free. And that's exactly how much you need to pay for a brand new Google Pixel 4. What's more, you're even getting a bonus Nest Hub smart display. How does that sound? Too good to be true? It isn't, but there are (unsurprisingly) a few things to keep in mind. First, in order to get the free Pixel 4, you need to already be an AT&T customer and upgrade an existing line. Second, an activation fee of up to $40 may apply. Third, you will need to... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles https://ift.tt/38XQLsR via IFTTT

The death toll in the shooting outside the Moscow headquarters of Russia's main security agency has risen to two, officials said Friday as investigators pressed to uncover the assailant's motives. The Investigative Committee, the nation's top state investigative agency, identified the attacker as 39-year-old Yevgeny Manyurov, who lived in Moscow's suburbs. U.S. Diplomat’s Wife Charged with Causing Death of U.K. Teenager by Driving Dangerously

The wife of a U.S. diplomat was charged in the United Kingdom on Friday with causing the death of a teenager by driving dangerously. A conviction on the charges would carry a maximum 14-year prison sentence.Anne Sacoolas had been in the U.K. for just three weeks when she hit and killed 19-year-old motorcyclist Harry Dunn while driving on August 27.Sacoolas' husband Jonathan is a diplomat who was stationed at the RAF Croughton base in Northamptonshire, which Dunn's family asserts is a U.S. intelligence base. It is not clear if Jonathan is still in the U.K.Days after the crash, Anne Sacoolas fled the U.K. and claimed immunity from prosecution as the wife of an American diplomat. Dunn's family claims the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of Britain has told them it does not consider Sacoolas to have diplomatic immunity and U.S. officials concur."The U.S. have now informed us that they too consider that immunity is no longer pertinent," Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab wr

That’s What a Good Presidential Debate Looks Like

Image
(Bloomberg Opinion) -- The big winners in the latest Democratic debate were coherence and sanity. With only seven candidates on stage, and a mostly strong performance from the Politico/PBS panel of journalists, this was a contest that really worked in terms of sparking good discussions on policy and allowing confrontations between the candidates that were their choice, not the result of moderators picking fights.I suspect the five plausible nominees on the platform — Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren — all feel that they did what they came to do. As usual, it’s anyone’s guess what Democrats watching, especially in Iowa and New Hampshire, believe. And, as usual, how the debate will affect anything (if at all) will be determined in large part by how the media interpret what happened and which clips get the most mileage. For Klobuchar, the candidate with the most on the line, being one of seven certainly appeared to help. At the very least, she

Sri Lankan leader says he became victim in abduction claim

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said Thursday that he has become the victim in the alleged abduction of a Swiss Embassy employee who was reportedly threatened and sexually abused to disclose embassy-related information. Rajapaksa said reports of the alleged abduction appeared in foreign media before the facts were established, and critics accused his government of carrying it out. "It is very clear that it is a planned thing to discredit me and the government," he said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2PZxsqA via Latest News
