Venezuela struggles with blackout as government claims sabotage

Venezuela's government struggled to cope Friday with a massive electricity blackout that paralyzed much of the country as President Nicolas Maduro blamed the chaos on US sabotage. Maduro shut down offices and schools "in order to facilitate efforts for the recovery of electricity service in the country," Vice President Delcy Rodriguez tweeted. Power supply was gradually being restored to large areas of Caracas on Friday afternoon, as well as parts of Miranda state and Vargas, which contains the country's international airport and main port. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2TCanOh via Latest News

SpaceX splashes down in the Atlantic Ocean, completes historic crew capsule mission

Image
The Dragon has returned to Earth.  SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule parachuted down to the Atlantic Ocean Friday morning, successfully capping the first test of a commercial spacecraft that will likely bring astronauts to the International Space Station — possibly in the next year.  The Crew Dragon capsule gently splashed down off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida at 8:45 a.m. ET after spending five days docked to the space station. The demonstration mission — which carried no humans but a dummy covered in sensors — is the first of at least one more test that NASA will use to determine if the Dragon capsule passes the space agency's rigid safety standards.  But it's a big first step.  After the capsule reached the space station last Sunday morning, NASA astronaut Anne McClain recognized the event on a live webcast: "We knew how significant it was and how important it was, really for the whole history of spaceflight. I've said it before: It is a new era," said M

Over 5 million people could flee Venezuela by year's end: study

Image
The crisis in Venezuela could have displaced more than five million people by the end of this year if there is no letup in the country's crisis, a report said Friday, comparing the flow with that of Afghanistan and Syria. The number cited in the report for the Organization of American States would be roughly double the 2.7 million the United Nations says have left Venezuela since 2015, a mass migration burdening Colombia and other neighboring countries. "Without any significant change that could reverse the economic, political and social crisis in Venezuela, the total number of migrants and refugees could reach between 5.39 and 5.75 million by the end of 2019," said the report commissioned by OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2J15DOk via Latest News
