In some midterm races, addiction is a crisis that transcends party politics

Image
Democrats and Republicans may have different proposals to confront the opioid epidemic, but this doesn’t appear to have created a national trend toward either party. Instead, in the midterms, the opioid issue is more likely to play out locally — candidate by candidate — as people look for solutions rather than politics. Yahoo News turned to a competitive race in New Hampshire to see this up close. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2z2bEW5 via Latest News

Brian Ross, who aired erroneous Trump report, to leave ABC News

Image
By Brian Steinberg LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Brian Ross, the veteran ABC News investigative correspondent who embarrassed the network late last year with an on-air report suggesting former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had been told by President Donald Trump to make contact with Russian officials during the 2016 campaign for the Oval Office, is leaving the network, along with Rhonda Schwartz, who served as the chief investigative producer for Ross' team. "After more than two decades at ABC News, Brian Ross and Rhonda Schwartz have decided to leave the company," ABC News President James Goldston said in a memo to staffers Monday. "Over the years they have built a team of the best investigative journalists in our industry, and they leave behind an outstanding group that will continue to break stories for many years to come." But Ross' reputation was sorely tested in December after he took to ABC in a special report and told viewers erroneously that

Birth of a planet captured for first time as gas giant bigger than Jupiter swirls into existence

Image
Even by astronomical standards it is a discovery that is out of this world. Scientists have for the first time witnessed the birth of a planet, a huge gas giant many times the size of Jupiter, swirling into existence 370 light years from Earth.  The theory of how gas planets form from a vortex of hydrogen and helium molecules captivated by their own gravity, is now widely accepted by scientists. But it has never been seen before, until now. Today scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg and the SPHERE instrument consortium at the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) in Chile, released a spectacular image of the birth  The planet, currently known as PDS 70b, is shown orbiting within a huge spinning ‘protoplanetary disc’ of gas and dust, which proves it is continuing to accumulate matter, and so is not yet fully formed.  The newborn sits within a 5.4 million year old solar system, orbiting a star called PDS 70 at a distance of 1

Tesla's all-nighter to hit production goal fails to convince Wall Street

Image
Tesla met the target by running 24 hours a day for seven days, setting up a new production line inside a tent on the campus of its Fremont factory and pulling workers from other projects, according to the company and employees at the factory. Tesla's heavily-shorted shares rose as much as 6.4 percent to $364.78 in early trading, but sank after several analysts questioned whether Tesla would be able to sustain the Model 3 production momentum, which is crucial for the long-term financial health of the company. "In the interim, we do not see this production rate as operationally or financially sustainable," said CFRA analyst Efraim Levy. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2tSdItM via Latest News
