Counterclockwise: remembering the not-quite-smartphone Asha phones

Image
HMD intends to resurrect the Asha series, which brought back some memories. The Asha phones featured more advanced functions than your typical featurephone, which made them attractive for those who couldn't afford a smartphone. Keep in mind that this story starts late 2011 - iOS, Android and even Symbian were still around, but options that delivered good experience were pricey. Before we start, we should mention that the Asha line was a key part of Nokia's "next billion" strategy - the plan to connect a billion people to the Internet, especially ones that don't have a PC or cable... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles http://ift.tt/2D6Muaa via IFTTT

Week 2 in review: Sony unveils three phones, Galaxy S9 rumors heat up

Image
Despite hosting the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the second week of 2018 didn't bring a lot of phone-related action. The biggest story from CES was Synaptics' under-the-screen fingerprint scanner which vivo showcased on a prototype phone, which we handled. It's a solid start, but it's not yet fast enough to compare with current scanners on current phones. Our most read article this past week concerned the Galaxy S9 and S9+ storage and RAM configurations. The S9 will have 4GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage while the S9+ will use 6GB of RAM and adds a 256GB model to... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles http://ift.tt/2CYLfWp via IFTTT

A proposed bill could essentially ban Huawei and ZTE telecommunication devices and services in the US

Image
If you've been keeping up with Huawei's recent efforts to expand on the US market, you likely heard of the major deal collapse between the Chinese OEM and AT&T. In the short term, this is undoubtedly disappointing for anybody anticipating to see the new Mate 10 Pro and future Huawei devices on carrier contract deals. However, the issue and its potential implications go way beyond that. On Thursday, when we officially heard about the cancelled deal, a few US legal concerns were cited as an explanation. As it turns out, there was an entire bill, titled H. R. 4747: "Defending U.S.... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles http://ift.tt/2EGTjLQ via IFTTT

YouTube is doubling down on its video moderation policy

Image
YouTube has been under quite a bit of crossfire regarding its content and moderation practices and enforcement lately. The latest scandal, of course, revolving around a recent Logan Paul video, in which the YouTuber showed footage of a dead body. It's no secret that the platform's automated moderation algorithms are not and can't really feasibly be perfect, letting the occasional adult, copyrighted or inappropriate content slip though the cracks. Most such cases, however, have very limited reach and can't even measure with the backlash generated by Paul's video, since he is part of the... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles http://ift.tt/2AX7oTi via IFTTT

Alcatel's new smartphone trio could be officially unveiled as early as next week

Image
CES 2018 has admittedly been quite slow in terms of smartphone announcements. This is pretty evident from all the attention Alcatel's upcoming 1, 3 and 5 Series phones received. Don't get us wrong, it's not that we think the trio will necessarily be bad. It's just that, these are said to be sub-$100, $200 and $300 devices, respectively and weren't even fully announced at the show, just teased. Well, according to tech leakster Roland Quandt, TCL might be looking to speed things along and start dropping details on the smartphones as early as next week. First bits of Alcatel's new phone... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles http://ift.tt/2CZmvgF via IFTTT

After dropping hints that the OnePlus 3/3T would get the Face Unlock feature, OnePlus has now confirmed the development. At the recently concluded CES, co-founder and global director Carl Pei said the devices will get the functionality in an upcoming beta build. Commenting on the decision, he said, "there's no reason to withhold features we can easily implement." It's worth mentioning that the 5T was the first OnePlus device to come Face Unlock, and the feature was later made available to the OnePlus 5 as well. Trade shows offer a perfect opportunity for manufacturers to gauge user opinion on future products. According to some anonymous industry insider info, Samsung took advantage of this practice at CES 2018 to showcase its progress on the eagerly-anticipated foldable mobile displays concept. There were already quite a few hints at the show floor for major developments on foldable panel tech, which is how we managed to learn about the delay in product delivery estimates to 2019. It appears that was only part of the story, as sources claim they have actually seen a pair of Samsung foldable panel... from GSMArena.com - Latest articles http://ift.tt/2EGoVSa via IFTTT
