California wildfire becomes largest on record in the state

Image
A sprawling Southern California wildfire that has been burning through rugged, drought-parched coastal terrain since Dec. 4 has become the largest on record in the state, state fire officials said on Friday. The so-called Thomas fire has blazed through 273,400 acres (110,641 hectares), surpassing the previous record of the 2003 Cedar fire in San Diego County that scorched 273,246 acres and killed 15 people, they said. Incremental increases in burned acreage detected by daily aerial surveys since then have been largely due to controlled-burning operations conducted by firefighters to clear swaths of vegetation between the smoldering edges of the fire zone and populated areas. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2BSopjy via Latest News

10 promises Trump kept in 2017

Image
Donald Trump in 2017 moved from being a chaos candidate to a chaos president. He shoots for the moon (literally), routinely says things that aren’t true, and often makes pledges that generate enormous attention but very little follow-through. Many of his signature policy efforts have been tied up in or blocked by the courts, his campaign is under investigation by the FBI, and his approval rating is at historic lows for a first-year president. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2BAYjEY via Latest News

Arab alliance: Yemen one million cholera cases report exaggerated

The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said on Friday an announcement by the International Committee of the Red Cross that cholera cases in the country had reached one million suspected cases was exaggerated. "It is nearly impossible to accurately determine whether the suspected cases are cholera or simple diarrhea," a statement by the spokesperson for the coalition said. Yemen, one of the Arab world's poorest countries, is embroiled in a proxy war between the Houthi armed movement, aligned with Iran, and a U.S.-backed military coalition headed by Saudi Arabia. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2kNteDz via Latest News

The 'bloody-nose option'? Trump eyes action on North Korea in 2018

Image
A year of erratic U.S. rhetoric and steadily escalating diplomatic and economic pressure has failed to convince North Korea to give up its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, leaving the frustrated Trump administration to reconsider its options going into 2018 as the world wonders whether it’s on the edge of war. “We’re not committed to a peaceful resolution — we’re committed to a resolution,” President Trump’s national security adviser, Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, told BBC News this week. “We want the resolution to be peaceful, but as the president said, all options are on the table. And we have to be prepared, if necessary, to compel the denuclearization of North Korea without the cooperation of that regime,” McMaster said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2DynLIE via Latest News

Three dead, six missing as storm hits southern Philippines

Image
At least three people were killed and six others were missing after a tropical storm struck the southern Philippines Friday, unleashing floods and landslides across a region of 20 million people, officials said. Tropical Storm Tembin hit the east coast of Mindanao, the archipelago nation's second-largest island, before dawn with gusts of 125 kilometres (80 miles) an hour bringing torrential rain, the state weather office said. "We forced hundreds of people to evacuate some villages, but the water rose swiftly and our rescuers cannot reach other areas," civil defence officer Saripada Pacasum of Lanao del Sur province, one of the hardest-hit areas, told AFP. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines http://ift.tt/2BrpU7k via Latest News
