Archaeologists in Greece find 3,500-year-old royal tombs

Image
American archaeologists have discovered two monumental royal tombs dating from about 3,500 years ago near a major Mycenaean-era palace in Greece's southern Peloponnese region, the Greek culture ministry said Tuesday. A ministry statement said the dome-shaped roofs of both tombs near the Bronze Age palace of Pylos collapsed during antiquity, and the chambers became filled with so much earth and rubble that grave robbers couldn't get in to plunder them. Recovered grave goods from the two tombs included a golden seal ring and a golden amulet of an ancient Egyptian goddess, highlighting Bronze Age trade and cultural links. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2RZn8kV via Latest News

Scotland’s Sturgeon to Request Right to Hold Independence Vote

(Bloomberg) -- Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reiterated her plan to demand the right to hold another independence referendum.Sturgeon told the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh that she will submit a so-called Section 30 request for the transfer of power with the aim of holding a referendum in 2020. After her Scottish National Party won 48 of the 59 seats in Scotland in last week’s election, Sturgeon has said she has the mandate for another vote on breaking away from the rest of the U.K. in the wake of Brexit. “This is a watershed moment for Scotland,” Sturgeon told lawmakers in Edinburgh on Tuesday. “So this week I will take the next steps to secure Scotland’s right to choose.”The election set up a renewed standoff over the future of the U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he won’t allow another vote and that Scotland should stand by the result of the last referendum in 2014, when Scots chose 55% to 45% to remain in the U.K. Sturgeon says it’s undemocratic to deny perm...

Whistleblower accuses Mormon Church of hoarding $100 billion intended for charitable purposes

Image
The Mormon Church may be misleading its congregation when it comes to its tax-exempt investment fund, The Washington Post reports.David Nielsen, a former senior portfolio manager at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' investment division, filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service in November alleging the Mormon church's leaders stockpiled $100 billion in surplus donations rather using them for charitable purposes as intended.Nielsen, who did not respond to the Post's queries, reportedly urged the IRS to strip the church's investment arm, Ensign — a non-profit required to operate exclusively for religious, educational, or other charitable purposes — of its tax-exempt status. He also accused church leaders of using donations to bail out a church-run insurance company and a Salt Lake City, Utah, mall that was part of a joint venture between the church and a local real estate company. No documents were provided to support Nielsen's claims, but Phil...

Horowitz Pushes Back on Claim that He Exonerated FBI of Political Bias: ‘We Did Not Reach that Conclusion’

Image
Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz clarified Wednesday that his investigation into the FBI's FISA abuses “did not reach” the conclusion that the bureau was unaffected by political bias during its 2016 Russia investigation.Following the release of the report, Democrats and former FBI officials were quick to point to Horowitz’s statement that he “did not find documentary or testimonial evidence” of political bias in the opening of Crossfire Hurricane, arguing that the statement proved President Trump’s claims of a politically-motivated “witch hunt” were false. In an op-ed published after the report’s release, James Comey attacked Trump and attorney general William Barr, saying “those who smeared the FBI are due for an accounting.” On Sunday, the former FBI director attributed to “sloppiness” the 17 "significant errors and omissions" included in the FISA application to surveil Trump-campaign adviser Carter Page.Appearing on CNN with former FBI former deputy...

Macron Government Pushes Pension Reform as Opposition Mounts

Image
(Bloomberg) -- French President Emmanuel Macron signaled willingness to “improve” his pension reform plan on Wednesday in an effort to end a standoff with unions that showed no sign of abating.Strikes that have gummed up the public transportation system, leaving millions to work out alternative ways of getting around, enter their third week on Thursday, with a fresh poll showing that support for the protests is growing.Union leaders met with French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe on Wednesday, with some remaining unconvinced ahead of further multilateral talks planned on Thursday. The head of the far-left CGT union, Philippe Martinez, repeated demands for Macron to abandon his pension plan following what he described as a 10-minute meeting with Philippe.“The longer the strike goes on, the more anger transforms itself into something else,” Martinez told reporters. “They can’t afford to hang about because the situation is complicated for them.”The government is seeking a truce during the...
