Iran's President Hassan Rouhani came out strongly in favour of talks Monday as his top diplomat came under fire from ultra-conservative media for a surprise visit to a G7 summit. Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif flew in to the French seaside resort of Biarritz on Sunday for meetings on the sidelines of the G7 gathering. "I believe that for our country's national interests we must use any tool," Rouhani said in a speech aired live on state television. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2NsXcvP via Latest News

Eggs from last northern white rhinos fertilized, scientists say

Image
Seven eggs from the world's last two remaining northern white rhinos have been successfully fertilized artificially, reviving hopes of saving the endangered animals, scientists said on Monday. The world’s last male northern white rhinoceros, a 45-year-old named Sudan, died last year in Kenya, leaving only the two surviving female members of the species. Najin and Fatu are Sudan's daughter and grand-daughter and the three animals lived together at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, about 250km (155 miles) north of Nairobi, where Sudan died. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Zh6nGB via Latest News

Trump Says He’d Meet Rouhani Under ‘Correct’ Circumstances

Image
(Bloomberg) -- Donald Trump said Monday he’d be willing to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani under the “correct” circumstances to discuss their standoff over the 2015 nuclear deal the U.S. president abandoned.French President Emmanuel Macron said during a joint news conference with Trump in Biarritz, France, that he hoped to arrange a meeting between the two leaders within weeks. The American president was more cautious about a move that would signal a dramatic shift in almost a half century of broken diplomatic ties between Tehran and Washington.Speaking at the conclusion of the Group of Seven meeting on Monday, Trump said he would meet with Rouhani “if the circumstances were correct or were right.”“I don’t know the gentleman,” Trump said. “I think he’s going to want to meet.”Trump also said he’d support extending what he called a “letter of credit” to Iran, secured by oil, to help the country meet short-term financial obligations, another Macron proposal. “It would be from numero

Authorities: Los Angeles deputy lied about sniper assault

A Los Angeles County deputy lied when he said he was shot in the shoulder while standing in a sheriff's station parking lot last week and will face a criminal investigation, authorities said. Reinosa, 21, made a frantic radio call Wednesday claiming he'd been shot by someone in a nearby building as he walked to his car outside the Lancaster station, prompting a huge police response. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2PeaVsL via Latest News

Macron attacks 'extraordinarily rude' Bolsonaro after insults about wife Brigitte

Image
A war of words broke out between the presidents of France and Brazil as Emmanuel Macron responded angrily on Monday to Jair Bolsonaro’s “extraordinarily rude comments” about his wife Brigitte. Mr Bolsanaro appeared to endorse a Facebook comment posted by one of his supporters mocking Mr Macron, 41, for being married to a woman who is nearly 25 years his senior.  The comment suggested that Mr Macron was attacking Mr Bolsonaro over the Amazon fires because the Brazilian president was married to a much younger woman. “[Mr Bolsonaro] has made some extraordinarily rude comments about my wife,” Mr Macron said at a press conference. “What can I say? It’s sad for him, firstly, and for Brazilians … I think Brazilian women will probably be ashamed to read that from their president.” He added: “As I feel friendship and respect for the Brazilian people, I hope that they will very soon have a president who behaves in the right way.” The Facebook comments which the French president found offensive a

Man found with mummified remains called dangerous to society

Image
Prosecutors called a New Jersey man "dangerous to society" after pieces of a human body were found in his closet, including a head, part of an arm, and a torso dressed in a necktie and suit jacket. Robert Williams, of Newark, pleaded not guilty Monday to desecrating human remains and separate charges of child sexual abuse. Police initially went to Williams' home to investigate allegations he abused a 12- to 13-year-old boy over several months, but when they searched the apartment they found an altar and mummified human remains that had apparently been used in religious ceremonies, according to prosecutors. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2ZvsTem via Latest News

Donald Trump offers olive branch to China as tensions ease on final day of G7

Image
Donald Trump softened his tone on Monday on two of the most contentious issues at the strained G7 summit: his trade war with China and tensions with Iran. It was unclear if genuine progress had been made, but Mr Trump predicted a deal with China after it offered to return to the negotiating table, described by the US president as a breakthrough. “We’ll be getting back to the table,” he said.  He also appeared to back away from confrontation with Iran, leaving a window open for diplomacy. Boris Johnson met Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister, on the sidelines of the summit to discuss a possible post-Brexit trade deal. After talks with Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, Mr Johnson said he would like to visit Japan “as soon as we’ve got Brexit done, which will be on October 31”. Leaders of the world’s major industrialised nations, meeting in the upmarket French coastal resort of Biarritz, have agreed to spend more than £16 million to put out the fires engulfing huge swathe

Candidate who wanted city as white 'as possible' ends run

A city council candidate in Michigan who said last week that she wants to keep her community white "as much as possible" withdrew from the council race on Monday. Jean Cramer stopped by Marysville City Hall to say she was leaving the race and later, at the request of city officials, put her withdrawal in writing in a one-sentence letter that did not give a reason for why she dropped out, the Times Herald in Port Huron reported. Her name will remain on the Nov. 5 election ballot. "Just checking the calendar here and making sure it's still 2019," Mike Deising said. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2ZfAzC1 via Latest News
