Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe's 'crocodile' president

Image
Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa is a military-backed veteran hardliner who outmanoeuvered Robert Mugabe and has promised to turn around his country's disastrous economy. Nicknamed "The Crocodile", Mnangagwa on Friday secured a narrow victory in Zimbabwe's historic first elections after the ousting of Mugabe last year. It was his battle to secure the top job ahead of Mugabe's wife Grace that triggered the crisis that finally toppled the long-ruling autocrat. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2zjDSau via Latest News

Image
By Sarah N. Lynch, Nathan Layne and Karen Freifeld ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Reuters) - Two witnesses in the trial of President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort testified on Wednesday that invoices purporting to bill a company tied to Manafort appeared to be fake. It was the first time that prosecutors from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's office disclosed the invoices, which contained spelling and address errors, missing information and in one case, contained information about services that were never rendered. It is unclear who created the invoices or how they were used. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2OzTFcY via Latest News

CNN reporter walks out of press briefing after heated exchange with Sarah Huckabee Sanders

Image
The Trump administration hasn't been on the best of terms with the media lately, to put it lightly. On Thursday, CNN's Jim Acosta walked out of a White House press briefing after Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to confirm that the press corps is not the "enemy of the people," as Trump has repeatedly called them in the past. SEE ALSO: Sarah Huckabee Sanders tries and fails to explain Trump’s odd comment on groceries "...You read off a laundry list of your concerns about the press and things you feel like are misreported," Acosta told Sanders. "You did not say that you feel like the press is not the enemy of the people. I think it would be a good thing if you were to say, right here, at the briefing, that the press ... are not the enemy of the people." Sanders then proceeded to attack Acosta and the press, particularly his own network, CNN. Acosta, who's become a target of Trump supporters' wrath in recent weeks, then walked out of the briefin

Israel says strike kills seven 'terrorists' in Golan

An Israeli air strike has killed seven militants believed to be linked to the Islamic State group and seeking to infiltrate the country from the Syrian Golan Heights, the army said Thursday. The rare incident came as Israel readied itself for Syria regaining complete control of the country's south near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. A Syrian offensive, backed by Russia, has seen Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces rout rebels and jihadists in the region, sending them fleeing. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2Koaswj via Latest News

Manafort trial: Former bookkeeper Heather Washkuhn testifies she did not know about off-shore accounts as she details former Trump aide's

Image
Paul Manafort's former bookkeeper has testified that the former Donald Trump campaign chairman kept her in the dark about the foreign bank accounts he was using to allegedly buy millions in luxury items and personal expenses. Mr Manafort, facing trial on back fraud and tax charges otherwise approved “every penny” of the personal bills she paid for him, said Heather Washkuhn of the accounting firm NKFSB. Washkuhn's testimony on the third day of the trial appeared to undercut an argument by Manafort's attorneys that he can't be responsible for financial fraud because he left the details of his spending to others, including his longtime associate Rick Gates. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2O5Lswg via Latest News

U.S. wants help finding parents deported without their children

Image
The U.S. government told a federal court judge on Thursday that volunteers and non-profit groups, rather than government officials, should take the lead in locating more than 400 immigrant parents who were separated from their children at the U.S.-Mexico border and deported from the United States. In the case, brought by the American Civil Liberties Union, Judge Dana Sabraw ordered the government to reunify the families by July 26, but that deadline was not fully met. While more than 1,900 children have been reunited with their families, or seen their cases resolved in other ways, hundreds remain separated, including the children of more than 400 parents no longer in the United States, according to the government's latest filing. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2ObRTxP via Latest News

NASA names astronauts for first manned U.S. space launches since 2011

Image
NASA on Friday named nine astronauts for the first manned space launches from U.S. soil since the space shuttle program ended in 2011. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's announcement signals a milestone in the U.S. space program, with its shift to the private sector for ferrying cargo and astronauts to the International Space Station. Since the space shuttle program was shut down, the U.S. space agency NASA has had to rely on Russia to fly astronauts to space station, a $100 billion orbital research laboratory that flies about 250 miles (402 km) above Earth.   The astronauts named on Friday will be carried aloft aboard spacecraft developed by entrepreneur Elon Musk's SpaceX and Boeing Co, crewing first the test flights, and then missions involving both Boeing's CST-100 Starliner and SpaceX's Crew Dragon. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2MfSA8I via Latest News

Trump 'is pushing for interview with Robert Mueller' despite his lawyers' advice

Image
President Donald Trump is reportedly pushing for an interview with Robert Mueller despite his lawyers’ advice, believing that he can convince the special counsel that the FBI investigation into Russian election meddling and possible collusion with Trump campaign officials is a “witch hunt”. Mr Mueller has been negotiating with the president's legal team for months in hopes of securing an interview. The special counsel reportedly wants to question Mr Trump about his associates’ possible coordination with Moscow – and his own possible obstruction of justice – as the final stage in his probe. from Yahoo News - Latest News & Headlines https://ift.tt/2vcOrMb via Latest News

Man with Down's Syndrome shot dead by Swedish police after running away from home with toy gun

Image
A man with Down’s Syndrome has been shot dead by Swedish police after running away from home in the middle of the night carrying a toy gun. Eric Torell, 20, who was autistic and was described by his family as being severely disabled, was fatally shot by police who erroneously believed he was carrying a real weapon in the early hours of Thursday morning in downtown Stockholm. Police officers say Mr Torell acted “threateningly” after responding to reports of a man showing a gun to residents at around 4am local time in the district of Vasastan. He died of his injuries after being shot in the stomach. One witness, who was awoken by the sound of several gunshots, said they heard police shouting at someone to lay down his weapon and lie on the ground. Mr Torell had been staying with his father when he wandered out of his home with the toy gun his mother, Katarina Söderber, said looked like a “submachine gun”. Eric Torell was shot dead by police  “He got it as a gift. It looked a little like
